Super Robot Wars: Calamitous Dawn

Liam blinked as he noticed Asaga once again, blushing at his loss of spacial awareness, but he kept talking, the flow of thought firm and steady now that he was talking about something much more his style.

"Not exactly. I'm an experimental physicist, my doctorate was on the study of space radiations and the exotic particles only found there. This was most of an accidental application really, and I don't like creating Mobile Suits for the purpose of war."

The scientist placed a hand on the Gundam's foot, thinking about all the applications that his technology could offer, but that he had to wait because people thought they knew better.

"However, now we don't have to deal with fighting just other mobile suits anymore. Maybe I can help your engineers, compare notes?"
What Liam had to say slightly deflated some of Asaga's eagerness, the look she was giving the scientist making it clear that she thinks that she isn't capable of catching up and holding a conversation with him.

"Well, I like me some mechs, but not so much the engineering and sciencey stuff that comes with it. Math is eeeeevul..."

To get her point across further, the redhead makes a strange expression while waving her fingers in a manner she believed was threatening.

"However, Chigara over there-"

Asaga then points to the bluenette, who looked a bit startled at the spotlight suddenly being beamed down upon her.

"Will be more than glad to hear your theories and such out. Now if you'll excuse me for a sec... Come on over here Chigs! I found me an intellectual equal for you!"

"P-Please don't call me that!"

Yet despite her clear hesitation, Chigara was already approaching the other pilots.
"I see, I was pulled from 201.M42, after the end of the Indominitus Crusade. Quite a lot has happened in a mere 2 centuries compared to past millennia, even beyond Inquisitorial Censorship. Cadia Secundus fell, the Galaxy was torn in half by a new Eye of Terror. Only the return of the Omnisaiiah's Avenging Son, the Primarch of the 13th, as the Lord Commander of the Imperium, was the situation barely stableized."
Both Cadbury and Sorell looked at Valrin, with wide, shocked expressions as if he suddenly grew another head. They were silent for some time before the Stormtrooper breaks the ice, his tone carrying with it scorn and disbelief.

"So the arch-traitor's bastard actually did it..."

"A new eye of terror... That explains our situation then. A warp storm of such potency and horror that it killed our Navigator on the spot."

And then Sorell capitalizes on the last bit the Knight Scion said.

"You also say a Primarch walks among the Imperium again? The 13th? The scion of the Ultramarines?"

Cadbury however, takes news of the development with a bit of dry humor.

"Guess the 41st millennium really lived up to its epithet. Time of Ending indeed, hopefully of its decline!"

Daniel was mildly amused at the red-haired pilot’s hesitation in continuing a conversation with the scientist. Though it’s not like he himself was an expert in those matters either.

“I can’t blame you if you can’t keep up with the jargon. I’m not that knowledgeable in those topics either,” he said to Asaga.

A snort came from Liam's lips at the other pilot's reply, recognizing the glazed look that many people, even the ones that frequented his university, got when faced with concepts too advanced for their comprehension.
He was sorry, he truly was, but unfortunately, he could never relate to the sentiment, as he was surrounded by formulas of all orders and magnitudes growing up, one of his earliest memories being scribbling algebraic symbols on a magnetic board toy.

"I would be glad to offer assistance or tutor you if you ever have the need. I might be a biased source, but I think that math is not evil, just used incorrectly..."

When Liam looked at Asaga's wing woman, recognizing his voice from one of the machines that they met in the desert, she reminded him of himself: introverted, softspoken, maybe shy.
He could be projecting, after all, what were the odds of finding another scientist that doubled as a pilot?

"Hello there. I'm Doctor William Tinmall, but you can call me Liam. It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance", he said, trying to be polite to the woman who he was probably going to spend a lot of time with within the labs or in the hangar. "You are the one in charge of the maintenance of your mobile suits? Their designs are familiar but other than the surface level similarities I would be happy to learn more about the internals so that I can help."

Was this request too forward? They were only here because of a mistake, in the custody of the Ceran Navyuntill they knew what to do with us, but I hope that my willingness to help would be appriciated.

"It would stand to reason that the opening of the Great Rift is what sent you all to this time, that does not bode the best for what my mission was. Anyhows, yes lord Roboute Guilliman was revived from status thanks to the help of the Mechanicum, and then healed of his wounds when he visited Terra and the Emperor himself. His badge of office is the Emperor's own flaming sword, to erase any doubt my colleagues would have. Of course, even those precautions didn't stop everyone, but politics are politics, no matter who is at the top. Doesn't help that he brought a new Legion of apparently upgraded Marines from Mars's chambers "

"Doesn't mean the Imperium is in the clear. Almost half the galaxy is cut off from the astronomicon, reports are other Deamon Primarchs have become active again, and my final mission involved Traitor engines gathering around a corrupted Imperator. Much work yet still to be done there, makes me wonder why the Omnissiah willed us here.."

Kane would stare up in the sky, it now or never, as he would risk it before screaming out.

“FEEL ZEUS WRATH!!! THUNDER BREAK!” As Great Mazinger Rose his finger and fire off a massive thunder beam like attack, that would go fly up to the sky where the radar last spike.

But then using the cloud electro field, the powerful attack would split around the clouds, causing a AOE where all the cloud would be shining blue, as Great Mazinger was releasing energy on the sky.
The storm above rages wildly, erasing the orange glints with their azure prominence, seconds slowly ticking by as the blips on both Kane's and Stella'sradar screens disappear one after the other until only a handful remain... And after several long moments of bated breath, the blue thunder is suddenly overpowered by a bright orange flash in the darkness above, followed by a far louder thunderclap and the last of the blips disappearing from radar.

"Detecting no more radar contacts above one kilometer from ground level. One less enemy to worry about."

Yet, despite Stella confirming the Gettersaur's destruction using instruments far more potent than the Great's own... There's this nagging feeling on the back of the Mazinger pilot's neck that things shouldn't have been that easy.

"Wait, Shit! Incoming right above the both of you!"

And there it is... Illuminated with a harsh orange glow from its beam saber and minus one arm, the Gettersaur made a supersonic dive blade-first toward the two Mazingers. With how fast it was going, it would not be easy to evade its attack, given that unlike those Railgun slugs, this dinosaur projectile could course correct and that it clearly wasn't going to walk away from the impact in one piece, practically offering its own head on a silver platter on whichever Mazinger it decided not to kill once the dust settled... And the question of its target was soon answered when it became clear that it was steering itself towards... Mazinger Z!

David's Gundam floated in the air for only a brief moment of rest, before checking his radar to make certainty of any remaining enemies. Swiftly, the Wing Freedom changed to bird mode, and set forth for the next enemy that burst in.
In the opposite direction of the thunderstorm, David would see a series of explosions and flashes of blue flame lighting up the alpine plains, a fight. Zooming in with his Gundam's powerful cameras, he'd be met with a high-speed duel between what looked like a giant cyborg raptor and a very blocky, very basic Gundam-type MS. While the sight itself was strange, there was something else amiss with the scene, namely the strange visual distortions despite the modest distance between the Wing Freedom and the clash of reptile against machine and that there's some unusual electromagnetic interference, also coming from the same direction.

Kazuki himself, had a somewhat puzzled mien to his demeanor. His shoulders were shrugged, and in his gaze, one could tell he was a little bit lost on how to place any input on the conversation at hand. Mechanical and engineering expertise were still quite far beyond his reach. Instead, he attempted to turn his focus into Daniel and Asaga.

"Come on now. Math is not all that bad. It's good mental exercise to munch some numbers every once in a while." A timid chuckle follows his affirmation.

"Nu-uh man, it's eeeeevul. If it wasn't, then mortal eyes would understand that stuff and people wouldn't go crazy studying it."

Hearing Asaga's disparaging comments about the subject she was both intimate and deeply knowledgable with, Chigara gave the redhead an angry pout at the implications of her little tangent.

"M-most people... But still!"

At that, Chigara just rolls her eyes and instead tries to focus on the conversation partner the redhead shoved right into her plate.

Chigara daintily shook Liam's hand with a hint of wariness on it, less that of a suspicious character and more of a tiny creature inching closer to an outstretched hand and listened to what he had to say with interest and in manner most familiar to the scientist. It was almost as if he was looking at a mirror.

"Y-yes, While I was hired by the Cerans to pilot mechs, I am mechanical engineer and Ryder designer by trade, but our mechs aren't called Mobile Suits, the correct term would be Ryder."

Attempting to get through her usual timid and lonesome behavior as her gaze rolls down to the side, distant in ponderance, as if attempting to figure out how to phrase her next words, it wasn't long until she comes up with a reasonable response to Liam's own queries.

"... May I first ask a little bit more about those 'Mobile Suits'? I-I mean, just in case any of you need assistance with maintenance and repairs since it's clear that all of you got into quite the fight, if all that battle damage is any indication of course."

"Yeah, I was gonna ask that too; all your mechs look banged up pretty hard. Just what kind of nasty gribbly did you guys fight in that ship anyway? Is it related to that meme-virus thing Vicious said?"

“Well, it is a bit of an exaggeration to call it evil,” Daniel agreed. “Though things would go over my head if we get into the more advanced levels the engineers and scientists here operate at by necessity, obviously.” That was just a simple fact, after all. Entirely different specialty from his line of work.

“Anyway…what do you think of all this? These people who picked us up, the survivors of that other ship, this entirely different world we wound up in. It’s a lot to take in when you really think about it, and entrusting our fate to these people does feel like a bit of a gamble, even if we didn’t have any other choice.” Daniel didn’t really know why he said all of that. Perhaps this was a way of simply venting.

Liam quietly rolled his eyes alongside the other scientist, a bit miffed that his offer of tutorship went unheard, but he guessed that Asaga had at least some qualifications to be a Mobile... a Ryder pilot.
Maybe the Ceran Navy didn't need someone that could write ballistic equations on the cockpit's roof, but she was probably excellent in other fields.

He hoped.

Returning to the conversation with Chigara, the scientist cringed at the excuse that Valrin came up with, not understanding how to keep information from (at least for now) allies.
It wasn0t efficient, and more importantly, they were hiding what really went inside that megalithic vessel.
Those demons, he was sure he was going to have nightmares for... a while at least: paranormal monsters of the most varied sort, from flying bombers to the devil knight that they had to face.
The less he thought about the purple, androgynous monsters, the ones that kept suggesting and performing the unspeakable...

Ugh...

"Virus is not the term I would use to describe what we had to deal. Infestation would be a more apt term. The people native to that vessel, they can tell you more, even if I suspect that they won't."

He shook his head, trying to change the subject as he looked in the blue Ryder that Chigara had piloted.

"Enough of that, we were talking MS after all. I think the first order of business would be discussing the alloy you use?"

Kane would watch the Gettersaurus launch a desperate attack, as he got himself ready to face him before he flew past him, oh no Ty!

“Shit! Tyzell watch out!” As Great Mazinger would the follow chase, trying to catch up to the dinosaur, but he couldn’t catch up in time.. Damn if only the Booster was here this could have been easy to intercept.

“Tyzell quickly away or destroy it with your photon beam! It heavily damaged it won’t be able to dodge or even sustains the damage!” Kane scream, as the deadly machine was closing in on Ty.

The Gettersaur wasn't as badly damaged as Kane had initially thought, as it was still quick enough to use its beam saber defensively, blocking the photon beam with the plasma blade in a blinding cascade of light and sparks that sprayed all over its face and chest, melting small but ultimately insignificant holes and burns on its form, then using the light show to cover its approach as it further accelerates its death dive, lashing out with a diagonal slash aimed at the Mazinger's head a split second before impact and then... Both it and the Mazinger Z disappear in a cloud of dust and flame-tinged smoke...

Asaga and Chigara exchanged glances at Liam's response to what went down in the ship. They quickly realized that he was in no mood to talk about what had been clearly a very unpleasant event and thus they let the matter lie.

"Guess we'll just take your word for it."

Moving on to the next subject, while the query was directed towards Chigara, Asaga jumps in to answer Liam's question.

"Mech armor? What else other than space-grade titanium-ceramic composite? Lightweight, highly resistant to thermal stress and okay at stopping 30mm caseless AP ammunition if properly angled! Sure there's better protecting options like hyperalloys or carrying a hunk of battleship-grade steel as shields, but who in their right mind wants to be so weighed down with all that junk? Speed and firepower is the name of the game here!"

Chigara was somewhat bewildered at the rather... Unexpected tangent, blankly staring at her partner for a few seconds before getting her wits about her and responding in kind.

"What Asaga said... Ceramic composites, lightweight, ubiquitous and good enough. O-Oh and about your offer to share info? I'd be glad to! The technologies of outworlders can just be so fascinating..."

“Oi Ty?! Tell me are you there!?” He said, as he was cautious of using great typhoon to clear the smoke since it could damage Z if he did survive..

Glad that the two girls changed the subject, Liam began to immerse himself into the topic at hand, making calculations in his mind as Asaga cheerfully explained her way of fighting and her relationship with MS combat.
Her philosophy had its strong points but it was severely limited by the technology they were working with: Titanium Ceramic was a good material in theory, light and resistant to physical rounds without exceeding the budget of engineering constraints due to weight.

However, it lacked the reactive properties of PS Armor, meaning that it could still be pierced under heavy or continuous fire.

He had to ask the men from this so-called Imperium what kind of alloys they had access to, but even with his limitations, this could lead to a fruitful partnership.

"While more conventional armor plating is used, it is mostly utilized to cut costs in mass-produced units. Most prototypes, however, are supported by another kind of armor system, one that reacts to enemy fire by electromagnetically changing the properties of the metal. It's called Phase Shift armor, which my Null can use to its fullest extent due to the ZPE Core. Other Mobile Suits struggle because the system is very energy intensive..."

The scientist eyed the Ryders carefully, trying to gather at a glance how they powered themselves, yet he couldn't see anythig he could recognize.
Didn't the Ceran suit have any cooling vents?

"You use ultracompact batteries on your Ryders or some other from of energy production? I can't tell from here."

While the sight itself was strange, there was something else amiss with the scene, namely the strange visual distortions despite the modest distance between the Wing Freedom and the clash of reptile against machine and that there's some unusual electromagnetic interference, also coming from the same direction.
Something was absolutely wrong...Was it some kind of ranged disruption coming from the cybernetic raptor? Or perhaps...Something else? David started scanning for the source of the interference, preparing to engage the raptor to ease up the pressure on the other Gundam, raising the Buster Rifle to lock onto target.

Now it was Chigara's turn to look confused when Liam mentioned Phase Shift armor. Well, her and Asaga.

"I... I've never heard of that kind of protection, the theories for using electric currents to alter the physical properties of certain materials, namely carbon are well-known and the formulations behind them sound; but for its application in armor protection..."

Then the redhead says her piece.

"Yeah... Ryder tech kinda went with energy shields and EM-fields rather than that "Phase Shift" thingie you got going for your Null. Cause for one thing; Ryders can dodge bullets and missiles all day, but a laser or a particle beam is guaranteed to ruin that quick since who can dodge light? But thanks to those, we pilots just need to keep enough juice in the capacitor to tank a blast or stick close to a ship or a Ryder with the equipment to project an EM-field to turn those freaking laser beams into a pretty light show and not an insta-kill... Provided that the field is strong enough to weaken them to that point that is..."

Then Chigara finishes the statement.

"With that in mind along with the fact that for all the efficiency a micro-fusion reactor has, adding this "phase shfit" armor to an already burdened power source on a platform where space is at a premium, would surely cause more problems than solutions..."

"Plus that ZPE thingamambob you said... I'm no science egghead, but that don't sound anything conventional at all."

Before the conversation could continue, however, the PA comes to life once again.

"We will be shortly arriving at Fort Ladon. Be prepared with all your personal effects and please cooperate with Ceran Army personnel."

Hearing the announcement, Sorell gets an indistinct look on his face; perhaps anxiety, perhaps consignment to his uncertain fate with the heathens, or maybe both. Cadbury meanwhile takes in the news wholly unconcerned.

"Honestly, I'm not too worried about whatever reception we'll get from these Cerans, they are far away from being Monodominants."

In the background, the Alacrity's crewmen; at least those with the energy to be defiant or weren't too busy getting the first decent meal they've had since forever, started to grow somewhat restless, almost looking like they were getting ready to fight their way out of captivity. It appears that despite everything so far, the Imperials were still committed to being unruly guests to heathens, due to perhaps pride and hidebound suspicion of any who were not like them.

Yet, some were momentarily struck by curiosity and made their way toward the hangar's windowed airlocks. To see what these "Cerans" and their civilization were truly like.

And they could see, and feel, the ship commencing a steady descent as it began to make touchdown on the military fort, the crewmen are treated to the sight of towering walls, ever-vigilant sentry turrets, and looming watchtowers, typical of a high-security location, but it was the utterly monolithic cannons trained towards the stars above that drew the most attention, the artillery pieces waiting, almost in anxious bloodlust for any spaceborne threat to dare present themselves before them. There was plenty of movement on the ground, particularly around the Sunrider's landing zone: The installation's Spaceport, where a small fleet of vehicles skittered about the landing platform like ants.

Daniel wasn’t surprised by the mention of phase shift armor. His glance at Liam’s MS’s change in color was very recognizable as the deactivation of PS armor. These Cerans preferred more obvious energy shields apparently, along with relying on speed and mobility. In that sense, they weren’t that different from the Aeolus, though it didn’t have much to fear even if it was struck by typical ballistic weaponry. Beam weapons though were another matter. There was an implication of potentially overburdening the MS’s power source, but Daniel never found that to be a problem.

Then an announcement came on that said they were close to their destination. As the ship gradually descended, Daniel approached the windows to see what they were landing on looked like. It was what a militarized base should be. High walls, watchtowers, and plenty of turrets. The things most worthy of note though were the gigantic cannons pointed up at the sky. Judging from their design, it’s likely they were specialized for shooting down threats all the way up in space, though Daniel obviously wouldn’t have an idea of their exact range. Regardless, they were definitely built to deal with very distant threats. Daniel also saw a group of vehicles scurrying about near the landing zone, undoubtedly preparing for their arrival. So far, the place doesn’t seem too alien. Daniel patiently waited for the landing.

"Monodominants are idiots, but at least predictable. I fear from what I've seen of these "people" that we may find objects and practices that would morally sentience this world to death. With the lack of respect they show to their Machines, I truly fear we may find an Abominable Intelligence here. I trust my words are not needed to make sure you and your crew keep your eyes open and stay vigilant to Heresy. We will reconvene later to share information we gather and to plan out our next steps."

With that said, Valrin once more ascended the latter towards Ignus. He would need to pilot it out of the hold of the ship himself, he had exactly zero trust in either the inexperienced Humans of this time OR in Ignus not frying most of them alive and severally complicating the situation further if they attempted to move Him. Speaking of, I would need to find Ignus a new Sacristan from the crew. I doubt the specialized training is there, but any surviving Tech Priests may have a far better chance at soothing Ignus and reciting the correct canticles.

"Of course the ZPE Core is not conventional: I designed it!"

Liam was just about to begin his explanation, of how he researched and refined his theory on space radiation before proposing the project, however, the intercom announced their arrival at the spaceport, interrupting the conversation.

"Maybe we can talk later? EM-field and micro-fusion reactors on mobile suits are technologies that we didn't manage to reach yet... uhm... see you later? I think I have to get back here to get the Null so..."

With that lame turn of phrase, Liam began to move towards the hangar doors, gulping as the giant autocannons entered in his view from the windows, knowing that not even Phase-shift armor could be overwhelmed by continuous fire from these kinds of weapons.

"They are helping, we are not prisoners... yeah, no panic."

In the veritable mob of people moving in the ship, Liam managed to eavesdrop on Valrin's speech, getting more confused the more he talked.
How can technology be heretical? There was a cult of science where he came from. That was incredibly oxymoronic when taken out of context, as a doctrine has historically been against progress on Earth.

"Abominable Intelicences? What are you talking about? It's something from your time?"

Now, Liam knew that Valrin wasn't the easiest person to talk with, but now they were stuck together in a situation that neither of them liked.
A conversation about his homeworld was a nice place to start, right? Just steer away from the... demons they fought on the regular...
