Super Robot Wars: Calamitous Dawn

The officer once again writes down Liam's testimony with nary a sound.

"We'll see if your story checks out soon enough, but we're getting out of track. The real question is: What happened to that crashed ship and how did it get to the point that it had to be scuttled in such a manner? Detonating a nuclear fusion reactor on a planet's surface would make its inhabitants very nervous and the Ceran people want prompt answers."
William Liam Tinmall
<<<Ø>>>
At that question, Liam visibly gulped, still unsettled by what he had to endure inside the hangars of the ruined city-sized ship, as well as what Valrin showed him in his mind.
The feeling of wrongness, a building disgust for each and every one of the four kinds of demons... it was too much.

"The soldiers described it as a memetic hazard, something that can cause harm just by virtue of knowing it. However, I believe that people should know the dangers ahead, because going against something which you know nothing about is a foolish endeavor... so... Great Scott, please give me a moment..."

He took a breath, then a second, and even then he didn't manage to calm himself. that laugh as they descended on the downed soldier.

"The simple answer is demons. Or a lifeform that closely mimics what we as a species call demons. Some of them even closely resembled classical descriptions, while others were more... esoteric. Still, they said that more will come if they were left to fester, so that is why they called to bomb the site. A shame, I would have been overjoyed to work on that ship, even if I think that the size was a bit much."

“So another species underneath the earth and they use their tech because they are the “real” humans? Why am I not surprised” Kane said turning to face the dead reptile body before he approach and knee down, staring at the armor.

“They may be far in technology yet I’m baffle that they would sneak in during the night and plant explosive at specific locations, as if they spy on us quietly from a distance or they are being fed intel” He said as he recall one of the device being planted at the Condor and not Great Mazinger joints, maybe they are aware of the Super Alloy NZ? Impossible but then again that old man did recognize Mazinger Z so it could all be a possibility
Kane would see that Steiner had tagged the reptile dead center on his chest, blowing a sucking hole with severely blackened edges through its solar plexus and out through its back. Guess for all their advanced tech, a sufficiently big bullet is still enough to defeat their armor; though this might only be the case due to the nature of the dino as a special ops type rather than a frontline warrior...

"The dinos may seem straight out of sci-fi with all their tech and bizarre design choices, but cackling villains they are not. I don't know if you've noticed on the way here, but the initial damage reports my people gave me showed that the reptiles killed all of my pilots and wrecked their TSFs, to add insult to injury; they also blew up the ammo and fuel stores along with cutting the phone lines and destroying long-range comms, leaving this base and the town next to it completely cut off from civilization and entirely defenseless aside from you three and several mercs of questionable loyalty and utility, of which only one group currently possesses a mech of any kind. So yeah, I think that answers your question of why all of the spy shit and the dinos are far from stupid enough to not capitalize on this."

Judging from his tone and from his behavior thus far, Steiner speaks from experience; he knows the enemy and he has rightful concerns.

"Yet it seems as though you have something that can counter them." David observed, "Otherwise, things would've been far more destructive, even compared to this display."

"...And those other machines I saw during the battle...It seems...Almost out of a comic book, far too strange to be real." The masked colonel remarked, "And yet here I am, seeing it with my own eyes...One moment, I was in space, pursuing a fugitive, the next, I'm here...If it wasn't happening to me right now I'd have thought it to be delusions."
"Not really, I just lucked out when I shot the bastard right in the heart, must've hit his suit's CPU or something. Though I will admit that the sparks and flashing that happened immediately afterward almost convinced me that I inadvertently accomplished the thing's mission of killing me, but it was actually just the battery rupturing from the shot overpenetrating. Oh and about you showing up in an entirely different location without any logical explanation? Welcome to the Amalgamated Earth."

"Well anyway, with all that said; I think now would be a good time to tell you what happens next: We leave, ASAP."

"C-Colonel Steiner?!"

"Of course, we aren't leaving without the townspeople Orban. I don't know about you, but I'd rather live to fight another day without having to give up anyone else's life in exchange."

"Yes sir, but the way you said it was a little too abrupt..."

“We are leaving? Understood, I’ll get on the Condor and I can stay on watch with Great Mazinger till we are ready to move, like you say the enemy might take advantage” Kane said standing up as he nodded.

“I’ll get going to my partner, I’ll see you two outside” Kane said to David and Ty as he went outside the broken office and headed his way to his Pilder.

The look that the officer gave the scientist was... Not good at all... Just prior to the mention of demons, he had been going through the motions of transcribing whatever Liam had said up until that point, where his skeptical gaze had become a full-blown glare; as if he was slapped in the face with how ludicrous the response was.

"Is this a joke to you? Do you honestly think that there is such a thing as "Demons" in this universe? At first, I considered simply recommending my superiors to incarcerate you and your ilk as illegal aliens, but now I'm starting to be convinced that you all belong in an institution, especially you."

As Valrin pulled himself up onto the walkway, he noticed the walkway was devoid of people. Not even lower enginseers running back and forth with basic sacraments. Even peering down into the bay, no one else was in the entire complex.

So Valrin walked down the catway towards the interior of the bay. Either someone whould try to stop him, or he'd eventually find his way to the other Scions, even if this complex seemed a bit further away from where he saw the rest head to.
And the Knight didn't have to wait for long until he got stopped as a small security detail intercepted him just moments after he descended to ground level.

"Follow us for questioning. If you would please."

Quite the forceful "request"... Further reinforced by the two Ceran "Knight-Titans" that had accompanied Ignus peering down on the veteran pilot like wrathful guardians as they awaited his response.

"Don't worry, you won't be getting any special treatment."

Ah a "debriefing", which of course as always meant it was time for the old formula: time to stonewall any attempt for information, essure them the threat has been dealt with, then just stare into their souls until they get the hint and go away. Inquisitor Haldentum had always driven that idea of what to do if captured, but I had found it honestly more useful dealing with the bureaucracy of the Ministration.
Valrin walked between the guards, taking point to wherever they were leading him, no words need be wasted.

The accusation made Liam stumble on his words, genuinely confused by the officer's words and aggression.
He didn't lie, at all, he was fumbling and mumbling, yes, but he had tried to be cooperative and tell everything he could share and possibly more knowing what Valrin considered to be necessary knowledge.
Was he skeptical since the beginning? Was this interrogation just a farce, a way to look for a reason to send them all to jail?
"Again, call them however you like, but we met a red, horned figure with leathery wings, purple androgynous monsters with pincers instead of arms, and green bloated things that bleed something rancid. Probably those were different kinds of alien lifeforms, but how it felt inside that ship..."

The memory alone was unpleasant, the whispers that promised everything and nothing at the same time, the most hidden knowledge and the most extreme sensations. The method of communication is similar to what Valrin did but much more subtle.

"The Null has camera for testing purposes, maybe the footage is usable?"

"You have a means of transporting all the civilians? And do you have a destination in mind?" David inquired, "I hope so, it won't do to wander aimlessly."

David then began to ponder.

"...Is there something specific?" He realized, "A specific item or objective the enemy had in mind? Or perhaps...You wish to leave since you doubt that whatever army occupies the base will bother to send reinforcements?"

David had little concept of what the militaries of this world were like...But, if the ones he'd had to deal with back home were anything to go by, he understood completely.

Steiner merely nods off the leaving Mazinger pilot before turning towards his lieutenant. The colonel briefly pauses to rub his temples before issuing further orders for Orban to send out the order for a general evacuation.

"I'll prepare a quick report to detail what happened in here. In the meantime, go and announce that we'll need every able-bodied man and service-ready pilot on standby to round up the civilians into the transports, pronto! We're heading out to Zeltweg. And let us be quick before we're eaten for breakfast down here. GO!"

Orban seems to fully understand and adhere to the urgency of the situation despite his overall crankiness and is quick to respond with a salute and a firm vocal. "Yes sir!"

And there he was, running off through the office door to set out for what he was ordered to do, darting past Kane. He scarcely seconds later, he is suddenly forced to swerve to the side so as to not hit an oncoming cane-carrying redhead, who was about to get bumped into as she attempted to make her way into the colonel's office.

"Uh, sorry...!" Orban semi-meekly states before darting out.

Not even bothering to look offended or give the young adjutant a nasty look for his haste, the Raylonard consultant simply turns towards the Mazinger pilot.

"It's an evacuation isn't it?"

"You have a means of transporting all the civilians? And do you have a destination in mind?" David inquired, "I hope so, it won't do to wander aimlessly."

"No, we're leaving as there's no point in staying here and dying to a numerically and technologically superior foe who already knows the threat we present to them and we have no means of calling for help aside from sending a courier over to the nearest base. Or would you rather have a heroic last stand so soon after arriving here? Without having known just why you had to die for people who never even heard of you yesterday?"

A pause as the colonel began clearing his desk so as to get started on writing his report.

"By the way, our destination is the Luftstreitkrafte's HQ, less than a hundred kilos away from here. And it'll be fully stocked with gear and manned by pilots who actually know how to fight, no offense to the poor bastards who got gassed in their sleep here; but a good number of them hadn't seen actual combat yet, and never will for that matter..."

Despite his rather abrasive and unprofessional nature, it was clear to David that the colonel cared about his subordinates with how his expression darkened and mood soured upon the realization that so many died under his watch.

"I see." David nodded, "Good. You...Care a lot more than most of those in authority back on my supposed Earth."

Seeing such a colonel give a damn...It was enough to move David heart a centimeter...But no more, such good people were fleeting...He couldn't allow himself to get too attached.

"Would it be wise to assume this...Dinosaur Empire will be able to make more attacks on this base sooner rather than later?"

Kane would notice the man passing by him, as he then recognize Stella, as he pause momentarily as she ask him about the evacuation and he nodded.

“Full scale evacuation, imminent order, I’m heading toward the Condor to get Great on the defense in case any Dino freak shows up”

He said before crossing his arm, with a hint of worry. “How the little guy doing? I doubt he Can pilot the machine in a good state much less injure”

"The Null has camera for testing purposes, maybe the footage is usable?"
The officer lets out a loud scoff, loud in the relative sense given the utter silence of the interrogation room. Guess that bit at the end was all the interrogator really wanted out of this.

"Very well, that will do. I hope for you and your companions' case that the footage isn't corrupted by your... "demons"."

Finishing his report, the interrogator then places his off-hand's finger on his ear, likely a microbead, and makes an imperceptible nod from whatever information was relayed to hgim.

"That will be all from you."
Ah a "debriefing", which of course as always meant it was time for the old formula: time to stonewall any attempt for information, essure them the threat has been dealt with, then just stare into their souls until they get the hint and go away. Valrin walked between the guards, taking point to wherever they were leading him, no words need be wasted.
It took only a short while, the trip towards the interrogation rooms being deliberately plotted to ensure that Valrin saw as little as possible of the base's layout and personnel traffic, but within 10 minutes, the Knight Scion would be greeted with his erstwhile companions and a couple of the Mercury's crew, all seated on plastic benches right next to an unmarked door, naturally under guard and just moments after his arrival; the door swings open and out comes the scientist boy, clearly having been the first to be questioned.

Daniel didn’t quite get the reference but the idea behind it was plain enough.

“Well, you didn’t exactly make his job easier,” he said, laughing lightly. On that topic of their short-lived comrade, hopefully he truly was in a better place.
Just as Liam's interrogation came to a close, one of the guards approaches the OMNI pilot.

"You're up next."

Daniel saw Liam come out and as he suspected, it was his turn. The AF test pilot got up from his chair and entered through the door. He was ready to answer any question as best he could, even if some of what he might say would be less than believable if he was asked about the events inside that crashed ship.

Clouds gathered up above not unlike the ones conjured by the Mazinger unit from before.

Thunder cracks and rain pours as an ear shattering shriek echoes throughout the mountain range. Through the lightning a giant four winged bird casts a shadow on the ruined base, followed by that the image of winged Pegasus glides down and their two humanoid companions.

four mechanical titans descend on a battle marked tarmac in shades of red, blue, yellow, and pink.

A bolt of lightning touches down and in its smoldering crater stood four human beings dressed in battle attire that matched the colors of their mecha. The one who stood in front as the leader in red wasn't the tallest or most muscular among them but he was still large by the standards of most people nonetheless and he had his scarred muscular arms crossed over his chest.

"Well-"

the man in red said,

"I don't think this is Newtech City."

"You think?" a one eyed suntanned woman with chestnut brown hair said as she slapped the back of his head.

"Where are we?" D'arcy Beaumont asked looking around.

"Lost" said the blonde haired middle aged giant behind them. J. Virtanen.

"We are not lost Jokko. We just uhhh arrived late to the party. Looks like they had fun without us." Hanar McKallister said kicking a piece of blackened rubble.

"Oh wow. It sure is pretty here- you know besides the craters and fires and smell of charred people in the air.. It kind of reminds me of a place my papa has in the northern mountains." Added the 2nd female member of the crew, a blonde woman with a ridiculously voluptuous figure, and a ridiculously long nose. Sonia Tormento.

"Comme c'est vivant" the brunette Beaumont added sarcastically.

Unfortunately for the team, their rather... Brazen arrival hardly went unnoticed and guns were soon pointed towards their direction. Well, a rather pitiful amount of guns as most of the soldiers in eyesight seemed to be far too busy loading up trucks or driving them along with some other vehicles, none of which had any real form of protection, be it heavy gun or armor plate.

To be fair, it'd be stranger if there had been a lot more soldiers around to threaten them with hot lead considering how badly and recently mauled the airbase was. Before any further tension could be built from the situation, a jeep scoots on by close enough to the group and their Zords for its driver to be audible as he rather impatiently informed the group, causing the nearby soldiers to drop their aim, unwilling to risk taking one of their own down.

"Listen, we don't want a fight and it's clear that none of you really understand what's going on, but just know that we're trying to get the hell out of here before the arschlöcher who did all this comes back to finish the job."

How nice for a bunch of military drones! They had the decency to give a straight-up answer as to what the situation was instead of going all: "I have my orders", "This is a restricted area" or "It's classified".

"Unless you want to fight those scaly fucks, then I suggest you either follow us going west; away from where they're gonna be coming from."

"Damn. Something really banged up their base. Hmmm- maybe we should've been morphed when we arrived." Hanar said turning back to his crew.

"Here comes the welcoming committee." D'Arcy Beaumont added, reaching into her coat for a weapon before Hanar pushed her hand out.

"I got this D'Arcy- I'm a professional."

"We all are, crétin."

"I don't know what salad has to do with anything- ah here he is. He must be the boss around here."

"Hey! That accent is kinda familiar. I think my Bringenburgen is a little rusty but it looks like we're someplace like that. I think the one on Earth is called Jerminny or something like that. Uhhhh Kannst du mich in eine neue Technologiestadt mitnehmen? Wir sind what was the crowndamned word? für Aktivitäten da, die wir nicht offiziell mit Ihnen teilen müssen. Yeah I think that was it."

"Unless you want to fight those scaly fucks, then I suggest you either follow us going west; away from where they're gonna be coming from."

"So that's what did this? Scaly fucks? Like reptile monsters? That sounds like something up our alley- however we're not here for that. Any fighting we do isn't charity. We gotta get paid chief." He said wringing his hands together while his companions nodded and smirked.

"What? You think our stormzords run on magic?"

They absolutely do.

"Our service don't come cheap! And we were in the middle of something before we found ourselves marooned wherever the hell this place is."

With a slow nod, Liam took his leave in a slow cadence, sighing all the way.
He told the truth, and yet he had the impression that he was not believed in any way.
And could blame them? It was a nonsensical story of universes collapsing and demons emerging, but he lived it, he fought them and...

People died because of them...

Char, impaled by a giant sword. The priest, was flayed to death by countless things all crawling on him. The people that he had been trying to protect were all gone because they had been deemed lost to the corruption.
People like Valrin could say that it was their duty to cleanse them from this world for the crime of being alive after surviving those horrors, but what could he say, an ignorant, of their customs?

"As long as he keeps trying to force his way into my mind, many things. Can I create something to manage that?"

@Sigismund

When he saw Valrin on the other side of the door, Liam cringed internally, almost expecting some other psychic attacks from the Inquisitor.
Still, right now he was supposedly an ally, one that didn't really like playing nice with his teammates.

"Did...uh... Did the Machine Spirit in your MS calm down?"

He asked, tugging the neck of his piloting suit and adjusting his lab coat.

With a slow nod, Liam took his leave in a slow cadence, sighing all the way.
He told the truth, and yet he had the impression that he was not believed in any way.

As Valrin started to walk through the door he hear Liam whispering to himself: "As long as he keeps trying to force his way into my mind, many things. Can I create something to manage that?".
Well it seemed Liam was trying to figure a way to avoid his... tender ministrations. That was fine, that just made the plan to get Liam close to the Xenos a better idea.
Valrin turned to Liam and ignored his question utterly. Once more the air around them froze to keep the sound from escaping to unneeded ears. "If you wish to create something to keep me out of your mind, I would suggest talking to the Xenos later. He has either a technology or an ability to shut himself off from the Warp. For obvious reasons, we must find a way to replicate said abilitiy. Your carrot is that if you can figure that out, I cant explore your mind. My carrot is that with that ability, we can utterly turn ourselves invisible to the Warp, and possibly banish Daemons back instantly. Of course we cannot tell anyone about the existence of Daemons, with their memetic abilities all it takes is one stupid soul trying to see if its true to damn an entire planet. Not even the military of this planet can know until they are vetted and made sure than none may seak out such power."

'Great Scott, it might be a little too late for that...'

Liam did not believe that Valrin could convince that officier any more that he was already convinced himself that Liam lied, but mentally the scientist already lamented the total wipe that the Inquisitor pilot was aboout to do, either by words alone or aided by his powers.
Also, his deflection made him think that Ignes was still angry, so that didn't bode well.

"That is a sensible plan, even if I don't know if he would be willing to share it. Maybe he would be more favourable if we shared something of our own? I'm willing to share, are you?"

Daniel saw Liam come out and as he suspected, it was his turn. The AF test pilot got up from his chair and entered through the door. He was ready to answer any question as best he could, even if some of what he might say would be less than believable if he was asked about the events inside that crashed ship.
Upon entering, the interrogator scans Daniel with a critical eye as he took his seat and surprisingly, his imperious, skeptical gaze softens ever so slightly at how the OMNI test pilot carried himself. For all his arrogance, it seems that the Ceran knows he's dealing with a fellow military dog, who is far more worthy of respect than some pointdexter who got thrown into the cockpit of a cutting-edge Ryder in flagrant disregard for proper protocol.

"You're clearly different from the last one. Name and rank, please, even if the latter wouldn't be much of relevance here, but we're both aware of proper military procedure, aren't we?"

As he sat, Daniel couldn’t help but take the measure of the man in front of him. It didn’t take long to realize that his interviewer was fairly typical of his sort. The AF army pilot wanted to get through this quickly, and so he obliged.

“Daniel Sorenson of the Atlantic Federation Army, second lieutenant. Or I was. Now I merely serve as their test pilot for one of their mobile suits, a ryder by your parlance.”
