Would it be presumptuous of me to put this here? I can't think of anywhere else it would make sense to put it. 🤔

I know fanfiction gets a bad rap because the majority of it, is kind of shit. But that doesn't change the fact that there ARE good fanfics out there if you look hard enough. That's where this thread comes in, feel free to recommend and discuss any fanfics that you've enjoyed.

Been a long time, but back when RWBY had potential, there was a fic on SB called "The Games We Play"

It was basically the Ur Example for all the shitty /TheGamer power AUs, but there was a reason for that.

As for if I would recommend it, both yes and no.

Yes because holy shit its world building is 1000000x better than canon RWBY, and there are some parts that you would think are tuned up versions of Canon scenes, until you realise those chapters came out a year or two before that scene in the show even showed up and wasn't ever nearly as good.

No because the thing quite honestly has a shitton of internal monloge, ironically because of said world building and how events play out. Essentially I would call it the RWBY version of Worm.

Shitposting community very much included.
Also very much included was the fact the author did daily updates of half a chapter each day, until the Luck discussion got out of hand and Disk 5 had to be launched

Might as well give a recommendation myself as well. :maybe

https://www.fimfiction.net/story/325022/equestria-girls-friendship-souls

We have here a Bleach/MLP (more specifically Equestria Girls) crossover fic I've been following for years. The premise being that the human world introduced in the Equestria Girls movies, is in fact a world of spirits akin to Bleach with the MLP characters assuming all the roles as Soul Reapers, Quincy and Hollows.

Pros
  1. Though it does start out akin to the Bleach anime/manga (and one arc is very similar in terms of set-up and flow) it develops more and more into being its own story, the further in you go and that is when the story is at its best.
  2. The story is written such that you really don't need to have read or watched Bleach to understand it and follow along. You'd just miss a few in-jokes or nods and the occasional canon Bleach character who turns up might confuse you.
  3. It strikes a healthy balance IMO between having morally grey characters (in terms of the factions themselves, there's no clear good or bad guys) while also sprinkling in the more classically good or evil characters at the same time.
  4. No doubt because this is an MLP story (and therefore friendship is a big theme), not only do the main cast stay much closer together in terms of power levels, but big teamwork battles are semi-regular and are some of the best in the story.
  5. A consistent update schedule of near - over 10,000 word chapters every other Saturday. On the rare instance this doesn't happen, the author always makes a blog to say that the chapter is delayed, why it's delayed and when we can expect it
  6. Much better world building, expanding on ideas Kubo left unexplored and using MLP comics as inspiration for certain characters like KIng Sombra (which helps make him a much more interesting character than his show version).
Cons
  1. To say the grammar isn't the best...would be an understatement of the highest order. It's pretty fucking bad, though I would argue that it's not unreadable bad. I've certainly seen worse and I really only notice it when I'm specifically looking for it. It's a non-profit fan project, there's only so harsh I can be on it.
  2. While you can read it without Bleach knowledge, the same can't be said for the MLP side (although I have seen people with minimal MLP knowledge still enjoy the story) given it's the universe the story takes place in. The story is on an MLP fan site after all so the author doesn't explain that much backstory there unless it's relevant and with Equestria becoming more and more involved (the current arc and next arc are set to take place there in their entirety) the amount of MLP knowledge you need keeps going up and up.
  3. On the subject of the MLP side, something that kind of irks me but might not bother some people is that the non-Alicorn or top tiers feel very underpowered compared to the spiritual cast. On top of that, rather than keeping Equestria the peaceful world to contrast the war-locked spiritual side, the author has elected to expand Equestria's lore to more closely mirror the Bleach sides. Sure in-context the two worlds are supposed to be mirror reflections so it makes sense, I'm just not a fan of the "Equestria was darker than you thought" trope a lot of MLP fics do.
  4. While the author is very obviously aware of Bleach's failings, his efforts to correct some of them can lead to over-compensation and flaws in their own right. For example the Soul Reapers get much less focus, resulting in more developed Hollow and Quincy characters, but with the drawback being there a lot of the Soul Reaper characters (aside from some Captains) are kind of under-developed. The pacing of the story as well can be kind of slow at times.
I would absolutely recommend this to a fan of MLP without hesitation. I would also recommend it to people who found bleach disappointing and who don't mind seeing it re-told and improved upon with MLP characters.

I would not recommend it if you're opposed to MLP in general.

Some of the fanfics that I currently read or have finished and would read again.

Naruto:

Uzumaki Naruto was born to be a shinobi. He was supposed to be a killer; a protector of unparalleled skill. His lineage and the demon in his gut ensured that. In canon, his growth was stunted. In here, he had a reason to be strong. He has to survive. AU.

Uzumaki Naruto grew up with lofty goals, guts, and determination. Instincts of a born fighter made him grow; duty to his home drove him. As the battle lines begin to blur, he must find a way to reconcile all he's ever known with the man he hopes to become. Large AU.

For generations Team 7 has produced some of the greatest shinobi of their age. Their legendary feats moulded not only Konoha but the entire shinobi world into what it is, for better or worse. They say that the road to hell is paved with good intentions but its the road to heaven that goes through hell.

Naruto always enjoyed discovering new places and locations in Konohagakure. One night, after finding a cave, he decides to venture inside only to find the most beautiful waterfall he had ever seen. Once inside, Naruto finds a lone rock that contained black markings. Thinking nothing of it, Naruto touches the black marking. What happens then no one could ever predict.

A childish challenge between teacher and student triggers a chain of events whose outcomes ripple across the Ninja World. As the dominos fall, crashing on the shoulders of the Child of Prophecy, one question needs to be asked. Will he bear it all, or crumble under the weight of the world? Starts slow paced at training trip. Canon Divergence Fic/w Naruto Character Development.

Naruto was not prepared for it. No one was. No one was prepared for the Great Rock which fell from the heavens. When it crashed into the earth, the countdown had begun. The countdown to the end of the world. Having beaten Sabaku no Gaara, Naruto would wake up and find that the world he knew, the World of Shinobi had passed away. Now he had to survive this world. Post-Apocalypse AU!

Harry Potter:

As the looming shadow of Voldemort's threat grows, Harry prepares for their inevitable showdown. At Dumbledore's side, Harry travels through the mysteries of the past and the conflicts of the present, all while growing into the wizard he was destined to be. The life of the Chosen One is not what he expected, as choices and challenges and the weight of war test his strength of will.

The presence of a foreign soul may have unexpected side effects on a growing child. I am Lord Volde...Harry Potter. I'm Harry Potter. In which Harry is insane, Hermione is a Dark Lady-in-training, Ginny is a minion, and Ron is confused.

Magically talented, Slytherin fem!Harry. Years 1-3 of Victoria Potter's adventures at Hogwarts, with a strong focus on magic, friendship, and boarding school life. AU world with a canonical tone. No canon rehash, no bashing, no kid politicians, no 11-year-old romances. Second Year complete as of Chapter 27.

The Triwizard Tournament ends with tragedy. One champion is left dead, two more maimed, and one missing and presumed dead. And now Harry Potter finds himself on a strange island with a strange woman and no idea just how to get back home to Hogwarts.

Harry Potter always knew he'd have to fight in a Wizarding War, but he'd always thought it would be after school, and not after winning the Triwizard Tournament. Worse still, he never thought he'd understand both sides of the conflict. AU with a Female Voldemort.

A young Harry learns the everyday power of words. He's going to make the Dursleys happy by being "normal". Then they'll love him, just like they love Dudley! It's a flawless plan... right? Smart!Harry, Manipulative!Harry, canonical level child neglect/abuse. Complete. Part 1 of the "Perfectly Normal" series.

As the unwitting personification of Death, reality exists to Lily through the veil of a backstage curtain, a transient stage show performed by actors who take their roles only too seriously. But as the Girl-Who-Lived, Lily's role to play is the most important of all, and come hell or high water play it she will, regardless of how awful Wizard Lenin seems to think she is at her job.

What is more terrifying? A wizard who can kick down your door or a wizard who can look at you and know your every thought? Harry's journey into the mind arts begins with a bout of accidental magic and he practices it and hungers for the feelings it brings. [Major Canon Divergences beginning Third Year.]

Year 4 and onwards AU, Harry/Fleur pairing.

Sometimes your life doesn't go the way you want it too. This very much reflected the way Harry's life had gone up until this point. Honestly, he had thought himself destined for greatness. After all, he had been born with magic and talent, surely that meant something? But in the end his life and fate turned out less than glamorous. If only he had another chance.

I'll post the rest another time.

Checked this the other day and I find a dude in the comments asking about MERLIN of all things...in an MLP/Bleach crossover.
Daemon I know you're not an MLP fan or anything but what the hell does Merlin have to do with anything going on in this story?

And of course when the author didn't acknowledge the question in his first response to him, he pressed the issue to make him address it. Which is a douche thing to do really, I mean I understand curiosity but if the question is irrelevant to the story, don't push the author to answer if he doesn't want to.

I mean Starswirl the Bearded is kind of the Merlin equivalent in MLP though he hasn't appeared yet (it's looking very like he'll be appearing soon based on the way things are going), but Human/Soul Reaper Captain Starswirl has so ask about either version all you want.

I am excited for the update tonight (assuming it doesn't get delayed) though since the current arc is in its climax so we're getting a big boss fight. Shit's gonna be hype. :awesome

Psychopomp, a Bleach fic featuring an Owl Hollow who throws the plot off the rails with knowledge of the plot, though it’s by no means perfect

things have started to get very interesting with the recent chapter

Chaotic Cosmos, a classic Gundam SEED fanfic.

While its a million words long and contains a ton of fanwanky stuff in it, the new set of BCPUs and the inclusion of newtypes among other things; the writing is great enough that I honestly didn't mind it at all during my first read of it, that and said fanwanky villains start getting more interesting and fun to read later on as the author starts getting more used to their characterization.

Some people are aware of my massive nerdlove for Sasukarin when I was 13.

Sometimes I nostalgically go through old things that pertain to SK:

Kanae (from NF) is a skilled writer. Her characterization of Sakura is I’ll portrayed and stifled (and I don’t even like her too much because, god, let’s be real, Sakura is boring) but it’s quite literally the only thing that’s not written appropriately. But she doesn’t like SK, thinks it’s a faux pairing, so she probably rushes through the scenes as much as possible because they’re just… sad to think about.
Deadbeat Dadderino.

I love them. Always have.

Brittle is very good story-wise. A gut-wrenching read. The actor shipping is strange, haven’t bothered with it.

These are the only FF artists that I’m aware of and have actually, like, read. Sometimes.

Does anyone here write fanfic themselves?

lol not quite, but I insert my ideas into other people’s stuff (mainly quests) via “bonus” stories

I have one idea for a Transformers fanfic, but I’d have to really hammer it out and I’m kinda lazy.

anyway

Haven’t finished it yet, but I enjoyed what I read

and yes, it passes the oh so very high bar of its Adam being better than canon

Does anyone here write fanfic themselves? Do share if so!

I may get back into it for writing practice.
This one was my latest. I wanted to try something different because I usually write about big topics, like action and war, so a lower-key family conflict was the idea.

But as one reviewer noted, I fucked up toward the end. I also noticed a few errors (like head hopping) that I no longer do. I just never got around to correcting any errors because I have more important things to do.

Looking back on it, I think this was the best one I did.

But it came at a time when I was busy with college and never got around to developing it further. I've borrowed some of the concept as part of a blueprint for an arc in a comic series I want to do though.

Oh and of course, OBD Wrestling is a fanfic of sorts. Definitely the funnest one I've done.

Oooh, fanfiction, sure.

Well I’d rec all of Ryuugi’s works.

All of them are super well written with fun characters, great worldbuilding and tons of knowledge. If I had to pull out some stand outs well.

A Dresden Files and Percy Jackson with Percy being reincarnated by Tartarus as a pixie with a monstrous hunger. Ryuugi does a really good job at illustrating Percy’s descent into darkness.

A awesome crossover between Danmachi and Percy Jackson. Unfortunately Bell isn’t here but Percy does a good job of filling his shoes.

One of his actually complete stories. It’s a small crossover between Dresden Files and Tsukihime. It doesn’t really do anything new. But it does everything good.

An old crossover of his, with Percy being summoned as Berserker in F/Z, it’s nice.

Getting into his more recent works this is a pretty good fic. But some might dislike how op Percy is.

If you like chapters full of exposition and op characters styling on plot, you’ll probably like this story. If not, then your probably not going to like this story.

His most recent story, it’s a very good xianxia story.

Getting into fics not by Ryuugi.

A Cthulhu Mythos X Percy Jackson story, Shujin does a good job with worldbuilding.

Already been recc’d but https://forums.spacebattles.com/threads/virtuous-sons-greco-roman-xianxia.925544/

Virtuous Sons is a great Greek cultivation story. Griffon and Sol are just such good characters and play off each other really well.

Another amazing Xianxia story with the MC kicking cultivation tropes to the curb and just genuinely being a good guy.

A Fate/Grand Order story with the inclusion of Jesus. Nope that’s not a joke. It’s actually pretty fucking good.

A really good story about Ozma and Salem ending up in the throne of Kill Six Billion Demons. Also one of the only KSBD fics out there.

Everfew’s Takada-chan’s advice is a pretty good Death Note/JJK cross

Villain Notebook for the future is a pretty fun Villain Izuku story actually done right.

A very good JJK/BNHA crossover where Gojo after getting stuck in the Prison Realm gets isekaied to BNHA and hangs around.

A cool crossover between An Impractical Guide To Evil and Percy Jackson, with good worldbuilding and a fucking insane Percy, with an insane plot.

A pretty good MHA and Kamen Rider Build crossover, is a bit to much like canon in the beginning but does diverge soon.

By the same author of Building A Hero, another Kamen Rider crossover is My Hero, Agito. Unlike Building A Hero! The first chapter diverges pretty heavily from canon, unfortunately there’s only one chapter as of yet.

A pretty good Avatar and Percy Jackson crossover.

A very good MHA and Tokyo Ghoul crossover.

Another Tokyo Ghoul fic, this time a RWBY cross.

A really good Re: Zero fic about Subaru’s friends finding out RBD.

A spin off of Forced to Listen, with Subaru leaving the camp due to his issues.

A incredible BNHA/JJK cross with Megumi and Nobara being isekaied to MHA and joining UA to find Yuuji.

A good story about the Sizable Hare.

And I've given up writing my own thoughts right about now. I'll just post links and summaries of my favorite fics.

Summary: A compendium of escapades and lofty labors where Subaru ventures without his faction's knowing across the map, whenever possible. Losing himself in either solving folk's problems, forging mementos with varying people or seeking bombastic stunts in order to quell his morbid fears. Hungering achievements. Greatness, like Wilhelm viewed his loved ones. To prove himself worthy too.

Summary: The Weakest Servant in existence, nothing more than garbage be it a Holy Grail War or any sort of fight. Yet upon gaining a new Master after a hero of justice stopped his corruption and sent to another realm, things just might change. In a land full of Gods and mortals alongside his new Master, maybe Angra can do something with his life. Hero? Villain? Avenger? Only time will tell.

Summary: Bell Cranel was making his way to Orario, an accident occured at which he hit his head. Suddenly, memories of another life came into his mind, the memories of Tomura Shigaraki. Now with the memories of Tomura Shigaraki, but the lifestyle of Bell Cranel, things get a lot more complicated. Well, as long as Tomura gets to destroy, the dungeon should do. But how does he have his quirk?

Summary: Percy broke a promise he made on the River of Styx and has to pay a steep price. Transported to a new world and thrown into another conflict, witness as he struggles to make sense of what's happening, adapts to his new environment, and attempts to unravel the mysteries of yet another monster infested world. Rated M cause I don't want to limit myself.

Summary: Nobody deserves to be alone. To change the fate of the world, and to forever change Natsuki Subaru's fate, everyone will see just what he has suffered. They will finally see his trials, and many will finally learn just what the true essence of their hero is. What will happen? What will change? Let's find those answers for ourselves. Spoilers for EVERYTHING ahead.

Summary: A monster is given a chance of redemption; a new road to follow, filled with new dangers, friends, foes, mysteries, and horrors. Will he succumb to the darkness or find light down this new road? As science and magic collide, a new story is born.

Summary: Karasuba never had any intention of finding her "Destined One"; to spill blood, any Ashikabi would do. With that said, she was never supposed to meet a genocidal maniac as sick and twisted as Emiya Shirou. Maybe romance wasn't dead after all.

Instead of the miracle-bringing Traveller in Aether/Lumine, Teyvat got another outlander. One who was far more useless, albeit influential nonetheless. Natsuki Subaru wakes up in another world and ventures forth to remember the past he had forgotten as well as to find a familiar face from Lugunica. (Spoilers up till Re:Zero Arc 6 and Genshin Impact Theories)

The arrival of a certain young hero shows the world of the Od Laguna just how small it truly is. Basically, Subaru is MCU Spidey and the Re:Zero cast meet Marvel Multiverse madness. Sounds fun, right? (First fic. Shamelessly posting in both regular and crossover sections for reach.)

Living day to day as a messenger in the slums, Ruby thought her life was set out for her. But when a mysterious meeting with an Arcanist draws her into a conspiracy that threatens all she loves, that changes. Wielding the power of a Wildmage and hunted by enemies and Arcanists alike, Ruby must find answers in the one place her kind cannot venture; the Arcane Collegium.

Summary:
Shortly after getting unceremoniously kicked back to Earth, Natsuki Subaru spontaneously combusts. A number of deaths later, he joins the Chaldea Security Organization. And then dies some more.

Minor spoilers for RE:Zero LN, primarily pertaining to Subaru's later powerups.

Summary: Class 1A, and some teachers, are brought to a room by a strange being who has made a deal with them. They will be given information about various secrets and future events, which they could use to save lives, but this information comes at a cost. Every time the 'on screen' version of them experiences pain, they will feel it too. There's no such thing a painless lesson, after all.

Summary: Salem won. Defeated and captured, Ozma was driven into insanity, never to rise against her again. For a thousand years Remnant has lived under the rule of the Eternal Queen, shaped to her whims. Jaune Arc is but a young man suffering from nightmares that aren't his own; driven to fulfil a destiny that isn't his, before the fractured mind of a broken man consumes him entirely.

Summary: With Arc 4 finally having passed, the cast has hopes of never having to watch Subaru die again. While they make plans for what do when they leave, the screen suddenly shows them all a strange meeting that was never meant to take place. An event which answers a few questions and shows what could've happened to Subaru had events played differently in his Past, Present, and Future.

Summary: My name is Jaune Arc and I'm cursed. At least once a week, I am turned into a monster, a beast so horrifying tha- "Guys, Jaune turned into a little puppy again!" "Arf!" Yeah... what she said. (Coverart by KegiSpringfield)

Summary: Being a god, Arceus...

Summary: Louise's summoning of her familiar was supposed to be the ultimate, final proof that she was truly a mage. But, instead she somehow found herself in a place called Raccoon City on an entirely different world. A world where magic didn't exist, and when that world falls apart, she and the boy who was supposed to be her familiar must fight for their lives against the evil around them.

Summary: Remember a time when things made sense? Humans killed Grimm, Grimm killed humans, and criminals could make an honest living? Back before teenagers ruined everything? Roman Torchwick remembers. When Neo finds a boy who can frighten Grimm, Roman decides this could be useful, while he pretends to locate the boy's friends.

Summary: My name is Izuku Midoriya, for most of my life, I was just a Quirkless boy with dreams of being a Hero like my Idol All Might. But I was told without a Quirk, I can't be a Hero. Then I met All Might, inherited his Quirk, and became the Greatest Hero in the World...But before that, I got bit by a spider and now, I can crawl on walls…not how I imagined getting superpowers.

Summary: After the events of Ragnarok. Jin Mori was too weak to continue, but a last-minute save from old friends allowed him to travel to a parallel world to recover. A world with Devils, Dragons, Gods, and...is that...himself?

Summary: The cast from "Watching Him Die Again and Again" by Reactionist, gets to relax after arc 3, however, the warden decides they need to get introduced to the new characters for arc 4. Now Subaru's friends are going to find themselves in the presence of each Witch of Sin which leaves them more confused than ever.

Summary: A non-canon spin-off on the original "Re: Zero Watching Him Die Again and Again" by Reactionist. Cast watches the movie, "The Martian, with Subaru starring as Mark Watney.

Summary: To pick up girls in the Dungeon and form a harem. That is the dream of Bell Cranel, thanks to the tales that his beloved grandfather fondly told him. It is for that reason that he travels to Orario in hope of fulfilling the dream. However, it proved to be more challenging than he thought. After all, how do you fulfill it when you suddenly find yourself married?

Summary: Megumin Potter was always seen as a delusional child who believed that the death of her parents and her mistreatment at the hands of her aunt and uncle were signs that she was destined to be the Chosen One and had dark and terrible powers within herself. Most thought her mad. Unfortunately, she was dead on. Hogwarts will not survive this.

Summary: Da Vinci's latest experiment results in Chaldea mysteriously landing in a brand new world. One where myths and legends are forgotten. For better or worse, Ritsuka Fujimaru is about to revive those fairy tales while simultaneously getting involved in a secret war between an immortal and a witch. Just another day at the office.

Summary: Rin might have convinced him to take the gig, but Shirou had a funny feeling that this wasn't what she had in mind at all. If being a master of Chaldea was dangerous before, then now it was an outright suicide mission. Investigating all of these singularities on his own won't be very fun.

Summary: Momonga, rather than being transported to the new world, is sent to his own real world: the Earth of the year 2138 along with the Great Tomb of Nazarick and with all his powers intact. He just needs to find a way to explain to all of the NPCs that their creators are actually humans- but what will happen when they know of how much their creators have suffered in this real world?

Summary: He awoke in a strange land, remembering only pain and the ravenous desire to search for something lost to him, only to catch the eyes of a passing raven. She thought she had found a priceless weapon, an indispensable tool better than any she could have plundered, in the form of an amnesiac kid. What she received however, was something far more precious.

Summary: This is the story of hero in training Katsuki Bakugou being transported into the world of Melromarc and is the new cardinal shield hero in their darkest time of need. Bakugou will go on many new adventures in this fantasy world to become their world's greatest hero whether they want him to or not.
