Whitebeard's Kabutowari

The Feat

Color Scans

Whitebeard KOed a Vice Admiral with a Quake powerful enough to have its aftershocks be perceptible to a human well off into the distance beyond Marineford.

As you might be able to tell, the farmer's able to tell the Earthquakes are occurring during the day, outdoors, much as described as being a magnitude 4-4.9 from where they're located.

Now we need an estimate for the distance that the island is from the epicenter. What we must note for this method is that there are no islands around Marineford about from Sabaody. More precisely, there is nothing in the triangle that links the three locations, Marine HQ, Impel Down and Enies Lobby.

Additionally though?

The Island was apparently remote enough where it had no clue that Whitebeard was even in a naval conflict with Marineford, despite every sea in the setting discussing the issue like its the fucking apocalypse, so it seems like a generous low end to suggest just somewhere vaguely off panel is functionally how far away the remote island is from Marineford proper. Mind you, the direction isn't defined, so I just used the 3 chosen for the purpose of serving as our approximations.

Half Grand Line = 110 pixels (take a look for yourself)
Distance to Remote Island (Option 1) = 175 pixels
Distance to Remote Island (Option 2) = 196 pixels
Distance to Remote Island (Option 3) = 263 pixels

Distance to Remote Island (Option 1)/Half Grand Line = 1.591
Distance to Remote Island (Option 2)/Half Grand Line = 1.782
Distance to Remote Island (Option 3)/Half Grand Line = 2.391

Half Grand Line = 22,404,760.485 meters
Distance to Remote Island (Option 1) = 35,645,973.932 meters or 22,149.381 miles
Distance to Remote Island (Option 2) = 39,925,283.184 meters or 24,808.421 miles
Distance to Remote Island (Option 3) = 53,569,782.32 meters or 33,286.72 miles

So, how does this help us?

First it is relevant to define the term epicenter as it is a word that will be prevalent throughout this blog.

Epicenter: The point on the earth's surface vertically above the focus of an earthquake.

The epicenter is on the surface of the Earth and as Whitebeard's quakes are on the surface also it should eliminate any queries on the validity of the formulas we will be using here concerning his quakes.

...

Most earthquakes occur at the shallow depth 0-70km. For comparison the Japanese quake occured at a depth of 30km I think the above source is reliable.

...

Between 4-4.9 is where it is noticeable to humans outside. We'll of course go for the low end of 70km and use a nomogram to work out the amplitude. You simply draw a line through the known distance to the epicenter from the hypocenter (70km) and the known magnitude and you'll get your amplitude.

h8Dg2eY.png

The red and purple line show you the upper and lower limits of the range. I'm going bang in the middle since the low effects described aren't sufficient and the high effects are too much to the knowledge we have. The blue line is our amplitude and that is 50mm. Which isn't too bad.

...

In actual fact, the amplitude will need to be higher because the epicenter and hypocenter were technically one and the same (as the quake was created on the surface) this is called a "shallow quake" from 0-70km. So we start on the nomograph at 0 and draw across.

KPSVEgi.jpeg

I drew through 2.5 as that is the most we can deduce. However, with a nomogram going up a single unit in magnitude increases the amplitude by 10x.

Why? It's logarithmic.

So 2.5 = 50mm
3.5 = 500mm
4.5 = 5000mm

You get 5000mm for magnitude 4.5.

Where A(mm) is the height of the largest seismic wave (s wave) in millimeters (mm) and delta(t) is the S-P time difference.

Look to GM's version for what I'll use as the s wave height (5000 mm)

The S-P time difference is derived by dividing the Distance to Remote Island in miles by 5.7.

Don't tell me to scale Marineford, or really anything, in One Piece from giant characters like Little Oars Jr (after the last set of retcons, he sits at 60 meters officially after a retcon/revision [ctrl + f "627"] that changed it from the original 38 meters) or Sanjuan Wolf (stated official height of 180 meters).

Let's use the Thousand Sunny (56 meters tall) and characters that have been around the Sunny for a demonstration. Oars? Is a massive Ouroboros where he's officially barely taller than the Thousand Sunny (67 meters, after most recent retcon from 39 meters), yet he and his descendant are somehow about the size of a Marine Battleship? That dwarf the Sunny?

How about Surume (300 meters w/tentacles extended) and Wadatsumi (80 meters)?

As you might be able to tell from this gallery here, using the Thousand Sunny as the de-facto measuring stick of the series... its easy to see anything beyond 10 meters in official height generally seems to suffer some kind of exaggeration compared to more reliable measuring sticks. I can pretty much demonstrate this for most Giant Named Characters (which I'm more than happy to continue gathering galleries for going forward).

In lieu of considering that, I'm going to use the Moby Dick because the Thousand Sunny decided to make a no show and Whitebeard is otherwise to scale compared to Luffy.

Whitebeard's Shima Yurashi

Here's the feat

The color scans

Basically, Whitebeard not only tilts Marineford, which would require a vertical distance all the way to the sea floor be affected in order for it to have properly tilted and resettled as it had been, but Whitebeard also tilts the ocean surrounding Marineford clear the the horizon we can view from a height of eye roughly on par with the height of the Moby Dick's (we're staring straight at the top of its crow's nest, if not slightly down at it).

Moby Dick Height = Height of Eye = 180.992 meters

Planet Diameter = 452,621.424 kilometers (here)

Distance to Horizon = 286,220 meters
Ocean Depth = 10,000 meters (as we know its vaguely within spitting distance of Fishman Island)

Volume = PIr^2*H

r = Distance to Horizon
H = Ocean Depth

Water Displacement Voume = 2,572,347,295,760,000 m^3
Water Density = 1,000 kg/m^3
Water Displacement Mass = 2,572,347,295,760,000,000 kilograms

How about a time frame?

As you might notice here and here, between the time of the island starting to tilt and when we see it finish its job, Whitebeard's coat sleeve roughly moves from around shoulder height to back down near his knee. Similarly, his coat rises off his back into the air roughly a similar distance.

So freefall~

Mihawk's Physical Might

The Feat

Basically, Mihawk slashes, cuts the wave in half, and sends it into the air all in the time it takes Luffy's vest to rise off his stomach.

Marineford Monkey D Luffy and Emporio Ivankov's Speed

The Feat

Color Scans

They're lasers/light/etc (both fan and viz bullshit)

Both Luffy and Iva dodge Kuma's laser, moving about the same speed as the other (Iva doesn't exactly appear to overtake or catch up to Luffy in sheer distance apart they are from start to finish at any rate)

cyaqydV.png

Unlike with some of the other examples, Kuma's not shooting directly at either. So, to showcase that he shot between them counting on an explosion doing them in, I scaled the distance as if being all the way to the ground.

Kuma = 214 pixels

Marineford Monkey D Luffy and Emporio Ivankov's Speed = 125,700,000 m/s or 0.419C

Blackbeard's Shima Yurashi lacks a time frame, so it mostly just serves to demonstrate some parity with Whitebeard's former powers. I don't particularly feel like doing Franky's durability at the moment. Iva's Death Wink looks vaguely relativistic if someone wants to give that a shot. Iva also dodges more of the Pacifista lasers, but from much further away and moving a much more ill defined distance to do so. Luffy's hill tossing tantrum is nice, but something for later. This is a nice feat for Luffy before he even sets sail at the end of chapter 1. And Whitebeard's numerous bit feat Quakes are just something I can't be bothered to put a number to right now. Same with Blackbeard.

Final Tally

Whitebeard's Kabutowari Yield (Option 1) = 36.763 petatons
