Contra (NES/Famicom) and Contra: Evolution
I'll start by listing some feats from Contra on the Famicom via Japanese version with translation. The Famicom version has cutscenes and some dialogue.
Here's the plot synopsis copy and pasted from Wikipedia.
"According to the Japanese promotional materials, Contra is set in the distant future of the year 2633 A.D., when the evil Red Falcon Organization have set a base on the fictional Galuga archipelago near New Zealand in a plot to wipe out humanity. Two commandos, Bill Rizer and Lance Bean of the Earth Marine Corp's Contra unit (an elite group of soldiers specializing in guerrilla warfare), are sent to the island to destroy the enemy forces and uncover the true nature of the alien entity controlling them. The promotional materials for the US arcade version downplays the futuristic setting of the game, with the manual for the later NES and home computer versions changing the game's setting from the future to the present day and the location from Galuga to the Amazon Jungle."
0:09 = An explanation of what Contra is, a soldier possessing almost super-human drive and ability.
0:42 = An alien meteorite crash landing in the Galuga archipelago near New Zealand. Creates a huge explosion (seems the aliens are durable enough to survive the impact).
1:06 = Two years later the aliens have brainwashed a bunch of people, they form an evil organization called the Red Falcon and plan to cause the downfall of humanity.
1:30 = Bill Rizer and Lance Bean from the Earth Marine Corp's Contra unit are given the task to destroy Red Falcon's base.
1:59 = During gameplay it's very possible for Bill and Lance to dodge bullets and lasers. Their rifles are strong enough to destroy big heavy guns. The player starts with the Rifle that can fire up to four bullets on-screen. There are many powerups they can obtain such as Rapid powerup that increases the firing rate of all weapon except for the laser rifle, Machine Gun powerup that has a very fast firing rate (can be combined with Rapid) and can shoot up to six bullets on-screen, Laser powerup that can take out an entire line of enemies in one shot and it's also safe to say that this is a real laser, Fireball powerup is not a traditional flamethrower but instead it shoots out a small fireball that moves forward in a corkscrew pattern making small loops and has an on-screen capacity of four fireballs, Spread powerup makes your rifle fire several bullets in a wide arc with the capacity of ten bullets on-screen, Barrier powerup it protects you from anything for roughly twenty seconds and any infantry that touches you will instantly be killed (except for vehicles and heavy guns), and Falcon powerup is basically a big explosion that destroys every basic enemy on the screen.
3:25 = Rifle/machine gun strong enough to destroy the fortress gate/door/wall.
4:04 = Bill/Lance constantly destroying metal doors/walls.
5:02 = Bill/Lance defeating some sort of defense mechanism via Garmakilma.
7:45 = Bill/Lance defeating a gargantuan alien beast via Gromaides.
8:41 = Bill/Lance constantly destroying more metal doors/walls.
10:27 = Bill/Lance defeating another defense mechanism and two hovering automatons via Godomuga that can create illusory split images of itself.
12:48 = Bill/Lance defeating a heavily armored snow sweeping vehicle via Dogra.
14:21 = Bill/Lance defeating a hovering deployment carrier via Guldaf.
17:01 = Bill/Lance defeating a gigantic armored soldier via Gordea.
20:27 = Bill/Lance destroying another gate.
21:10 = Bill/Lance arriving at the Alien's Lair while also killing and destroying everything in their path.
23:50 = Seems like destroying the lair ended up destroying the island also.
Here's Contra: Evolution which is a high-definition remake of the original Contra that adds some new features (like the Homing Missiles powerup for Bill and Lance, ) and two new characters Erica Ricci (a female soldier from the German Special Force) and Sally Inohara (a female soldier from the Asian Special Force, and is a descendant of a clan of ninjas).
Erica and Sally have their own unique weaponry.
Erica's Machine Gun powerup is submachine guns, Laser powerup shoots instead very fast and straight armor-piercing missiles, Fireball powerup is throwing grenades, Spread powerup is large energy projectile that splits up into four fragments, and Homing Missile powerup is the same as Bill and Lance but slower.
Sally has a Katana as her melee weapon (she's the only one with a melee weapon), and instead of using guns, she uses throwing weapons such as kunai instead of a rifle. Sally's Spread powerup is five-way kunai, Laser powerup is Sally throwing longer spears/Yari with superhuman strength and speed, Machine Gun powerup is Sally throwing spikes in rapid succession, Fireball powerup is Sally throwing three shurikens set in y-axis traveling straight, and Homing Missile powerup is Sally throwing boomerangs with homing capability.
1:50 = Bill/Lance/Erica/Sally destroying the fortress gate/door/wall.
2:21 = Bill/LanceErica/Sally constantly destroying metal doors/walls.
3:12 = Bill/Lance/Erica/Sally defeating some sort of defense mechanism via Garmakilma.
5:48 = Bill/Lance/Erica/Sally defeating a gargantuan alien beast via Gromaides.
6:37 = Bill/Lance/Erica/Sally destroying more metal doors/walls.
8:45 = Bill/Lance/Erica/Sally another defense mechanism and two hovering automatons via Godomuga that can create illusory split images of itself.
11:24 = Bill/Lance/Erica/Sally defeating a heavily armored snow sweeping vehicle via Dogra.
13:09 = Bill/Lance/Erica/Sally defeating a hovering deployment carrier via Guldaf.
15:51 = Bill/Lance/Erica/Sally defeating a gigantic armored soldier via Gordea.
20:34 = Bill/Lance/Erica/Sally arriving at the Alien's Lair while also killing and destroying everything in their path.
23:05 = Just like the Famicom version seems like destroying the lair ended up destroying the island also.
