Not exactly missing but yeah sure. Whether or not viruses are alive is a troublesome argument. Also we don't know how they first arouse, they might have been one of the first single celled life that decided to "revert" to a more parasitic and simple form attacking other life at the time. So to say they're the link between self-replicating particles and proper life might not be true.
