Death Battle Discussion

Weird, I thought even the Death Battle community found this episode's solar disk argument to be questionable
I'm not talking about the DB community in general, I'm talking about hardcore DB fans. Whenever anyone posts a vs thread of two characters that were featured in any DB (even all the way back in S1) people would just spam links of the DB saying "um this match-up has already been decided a long time ago" or something of that nature

Also not trying to be overly critical but the dialogue was also underwhelming.
"My son would kick your son's ass"
is such a weird and ooc thing for Bardock to say even if it was meant to be like the TFS version...which I don't think he was meant to be anyway.

According to a gu yon the VSB discord, the very articles Speedy posted would just need the disc to be larger than Earth, nothing suggests any need for stellar sizes

With SMT scaling Joker stomps.

Without it he gets stomped.

The only SMT games I have played are Persona 3, 4, and 5. So far only Mokoto has shown anything impressive.

I haven't beat 5 yet though.

Everyone is like I can't wait to see how DB handles talking about Ger.

Let's see how they talk about SMT.

I think I got a proper size for the Solar Disc. I will post it when I get done with work and come home, but I got 25,832.05 km. This makes MUCH more sense. It would also make more sense for the actual scan. I will show in a second.

I understand your concern, but I would be worried about another two things

Death Battle had aired many episodes with verdicts that align with results from the OBD, even if the reasoning or calcs may not fit ours. Such a poor level of research may make ignorant haters question verdicts that are actually correct, just because of screwups like this one. So, we may have to defend verdicts that look questionable for people who are not into Vs. debating, but are fine when following OBD standards

The other issue is how the reliance on subpar research and botched verdicts may affect the show. With this episode we're seeing a negative response not only from casuals and Vs. communities, but from Death Battle fans as well, which may include people who gave a lot of money to revive the show. Results like this could negatively impact the good faith Death Battle had built over the years, and even turn off new viewers

So, this is probably a situation in which everyone loses

I'm gonna give them the benefit of the doubt and say this is just a similar situation with Darth Vader where they just so happened to get some new writers after going indie because uhhhhhhhhhhhh
this is just terrible math, I will show my calculation in a bit

say, anyone got universal sandbox?

Okay guys, here is the gist

DB's justification for the disk being at a Lagrange point still stands. 1,500,000 kilometers.

The disk had to be larger enough to eclipse the Earth. However, that is simply not enough. The shadow of an eclipse is called an Umbra, and it is only about 160 km

In order to do what this did, where the whole planet was put into darkness. We have to assume the umbra matched the diameter of the whole planet, and that the distance was the lagrange point instead of the distance from the Moon to Earth.

A person already engineered a way to calculate it:

He came up with this formula which can accurately calculate the size of an eclipse's umbra:

x = 3474 - 2[380,000Tan(0.25deg)]

Where 3474 is the diameter of the moon and 380,000 is the distance from Earth to the Moon and x is the umbra size

so I just have to plug in the new numbers. I will be generous, DB pointed out the planet is large, so I will use the largest rocky planet:

2.37x the diameter of Earth or 30,198.54 kilometers.

https://spacecalcs.com/calcs/lagrange-points/

= 4,211,935 km

And the distance I will replace 380,000 with 4,211,935

so: 30,198.54 = D - 2[4,211,935Tan(0.25deg)]
D = 30,198.54 + 2[4,211,935Tan(0.25deg)] = 66,954.84 kilometers

I got ~25,832 km from Earth size but I am being generous here.

G1 established the thickness ratio was = 0.0152505447, so it has a thickness of 1,021.10 kilometers.

I will still use stainless steel here rather than glass like Speedy is suggesting. It won't matter.

pi(66,954.84 km)^2 * 1,021.10 kilometers * 7.75 g/cm^3 = 1.11e28 kilograms

Now, let us assume the kinetic energy is equal to it crossing its diameter in one second, or 66,954.84 km/s

I get 2.59(10)^41 joules or 61.90 quettatons of tnt

I am being generous here with the velocity involved, and frankly just assuming it created an umbra as large as the largest rocky planet and also calculating the lagrange point based on that.

There is no reason to believe, as long as we don't have any animated media of it (Which won't come out for years), that it exploded that violently. We have no time frame, no clear image of the scale of its destruction, etc, etc. Violent fragmentation is still the best way to go without a proper timeframe or image of its destruction:

pi(66,954.84 km)^2 * 1,021.10 kilometers * 597 joules/cm^3 = 8.59(10)^30 joules or 2.05 zettatons of tnt

There is no need for the Sun Disc to be as large as it stated. In fact, in the original calculation at 1.5 million km away a 700,000 km disc would take up way more space and appeal way larger in the scan we see. This makes way more sense. It's not ohio sized, but it's not star sized.

Going by this, Bardock should have won. The Solar Disc was grotesquely inflated in size allowing for relativistic kinetic energy to go brrrr and wank Omniman to almost supernova level. This works better in the context of the series for sure.

You know what the problem with all this is? Too much calcing. Niggas HAVE to put a number to something instead of just looking at the feat themselves.

They will look at a feat, say its not impressive visually, calc it, and have it be absolutely above what was shown
and then will look at a feat thats visually impressive, calc it, and go, actually its not that powerful.

They will look a a nigga blow up a city and calc it to be continent level
look at a dude putting out a beam of sunlight to kill a man and calc it to be city level ignoring everything else about the feat

"Sure it was a punch barrage but each punch is only calced at city level which means its not that strong"
ignores that the guy deliviered like 9000 city busting punches within half a second

Reject calcs. Return to eyeballing.

It pisses me off that this was going t obe the easiest W Dragon Ball was gonna get and they fucked it up.

Fuck it, I don't want Ultraman vs Gohan. I want Gohan vs Mark. Make it happen. Everyone vote for that for DB 2025-2026.
I was thinking of something similar

This situation not only reminded me of Strunton's Yusuke calc, it also made me recall what happened to Ganondorf

First, he won unfairly against Bowser, a MU in which even their research team declared Bowser the victor

They eventually brought Ganondorf back just to feed him to Dracula. Some people from the wiki saw it as "karma"

They could probably do something similar to make up for such a huge screwup, but instead of bringing Nolan back again, they just feed Mark to Gohan and call it a day
