OBD Convo #59: RealxEyes

So I click on this video to see someone do a challenge run and I'm met with the following summary of the game's plot.

"Final Fantasy X is the story of a group of young people, fighting against a Theocracy that is hell bent on maintaining their political power, even if it means destroying the world around them. They're fighting a government that is Xenophobic and anti-science, that's predicated on a status quo of cyclical violence. Thank God it's just a video game right?"
:whatisthis

WOW! I legitimately don't think I've EVER encountered a more fundamentally INCORRECT reading of a Final Fantasy's story before in my life. Which is saying something because I've seen people say some stupid shit about Final Fantasy XIII in particular.

  1. Yevon isn't "keeping Sin around" they LITERALLY don't think there's a way to get rid of it. The damn thing went through the Machina armies of Bevelle for a shortcut when it was first created, every other attempt has failed miserably and the ONLY Machina they believed MIGHT be able to beat it (Vegnagun) would be just as much, if not MORE of a threat than Sin is.
  2. They truly believed the cycle of summoners sacrificing themselves was the ONLY way to keep Spira from being destroyed. It's not JUST about maintaining power, it's about keeping Spira alive and giving the people some semblance of hope, even if its a false hope, that Sin could be gone one day so the people didn't break completely to the despair.
  3. They hardly want to see the world destroyed (that's a Seymour thing specifically) considering that, when Yuna gets rid of Yunalesca and the Final Aeon, Mika freaks out and almost immediately sends himself because he had "NO DESIRE TO WATCH SPIRA DIE" which he felt Yuna had basically doomed them to at that point.
  4. They weren't "anti-science", for fuck's sake they used Machina themselves against the party and in their own main temple. They WERE authoritarian and against anyone trying to think for themselves outside of the system they laid out. This is why they allowed Operation Mihen to go ahead and persecuted the Al Bhed. These all necessary evils in their eyes in order to keep the world from being destroyed
Not saying they WEREN'T bad but definitely not to the extent this idiot tried to make out.
I don't know how the fuck you misread the game's story this fucking bad though. :scust

Uria the sacred beast? That's kinda random, nothing for the other ones?
Nope nothing announced for them yet

My dude, he simply said all of that so he can go all full Anti-Trumper and show how unique he is and still fight the power, you dig?

But no seriously, you barely scratched the surface if that's literally the garbage dude states in how "similar" the real world has gotten to Final Fantasy X as it's basically just the same old retarded Far Leftist Reddit take that makes you vomit:
1. As you stated, the Religion of Yevon had no fucking clue on how to get rid of Sin and they didn't "cling to power" because of the fact that they wanted to keep power, they "clung to power" because it was either that OR LITERALLY FALL INTO ENDLESS DESPAIR! Even Yunalesca, Yu Yevon's daughter, believed there was nothing to do but do the same damned pattern over and over again because Sin was unkillable. Even trying to take Yunalesca at her worst that she MUST have known, considering Final Fantasy X-2 and Vegnagun? I can buy her trying to keep the cycle of Sin regardless because of bullshit like that.

2. Bevelle wasn't Anti-Science and neither was most of the characters that realized Sin's pattern:
The issue was unironically YU YEVON/SIN WAS ANTI-SCIENCE DUE TO THE BULLSHIT WITH BEVELLE! And even Yu Yevon didn't touch certain Machina like the machines that basically help maintain and create Blitzball as a sport because surprise, surprise, Yu Yevon himself didn't hate all Machina, he hates the technology that ultimately damned his homeworld and Bevelle, realizing where the issue was(and the fact that Sin tends to avoid Bevelle for plenty of reasons) was able to stockpile Machina for their own use... but at the same time forbid others because Sin would basically immediately head to and ruin anyone who dares go too high on the technological totem pole.

Like it's not even getting shit about Final Fantasy X that's the problem just for a shitty "We have become FFX", it's getting it all wrong and fucking it all up just to go "religion bad" when that wasn't even what FFX touched on(which is explicilty in X-2).

Nope nothing announced for them yet

Bring on the guy who stated Lavos wasn't a bad guy at all and was more of a cataclysmic force of nature... despite Chrono Trigger's implication(which Chrono Cross fully confirmed) that Lavos was sentient and malevolent.

Chrono Trigger's Lavos is no ordinary villain—it’s a cosmic parasite, emotionless and indifferent. This video essay explores Lavos’ terrifying uniqueness and how its detached nature redefines JRPG antagonists.

Yeah, tell that to whoever goes and looks at the genuine Frozen Flame and have something(which is Lavos) speaking to them pointblank or the Time Devourer's entire plan which would explicitly require it having intelligence... and Schala only gave it the means to be able to operate within the Darkness Beyond Time, not intelligence or malevolence.

The funny thing is that I checked later in the video where he goes over the "themes" of the game, calling it a "media literacy test" and then promptly regurgitates the same hilariously incorrect shit over again. :jordangif

I mean he brought up the Al Bhed laser doing "more to Sin's shield than, you know, swords".

Would that be the same laser that, even when there was NO SHIELD, ultimately did superficial damage (and only did that because they aimed for weak spots) with the TWO shots it was able to fire before overloading, leading to the party having to deal the real damage against Sin when he was about to nuke them with his overdrive?

Is that the laser you're referring to my man, 'cause it did fuck all that the party couldn't with their "swords"? :maybe

Which ONLY was able to work because Sin was weakened due to the Hymn of The Faith... which only happened because Jecht was the current Final Aeon that's operating Sin and loves the shit out of the Hymn...

So it's even more retarded considering the fucking game itself put on a huge ass scene of everyone on the planet singing it all at once for it to work!

And THIS is the thing I don't think he gets when talking about how bad the system Yevon maintained was.
The sheer amount of shit that had to line up just right, for ANY of that final battle to even be FEASIBLE, is staggering.

They had to find out who Sin was, they had to find out the Hymn would calm him, they had to have the son of Sin (Tidus) as part of the party to aid the Hymn in weakening it, the party themselves are basically the strongest group of characters ever assembled in this setting, the Fayth had to step in directly to aid them against Yu Yevon or he'd have killed them anyway AND let's not forget the small detail of needing to find, salvage and be able to work an airship in order to even take the fight to the airborne Sin in the first place

The stars had to fucking align for any of that to work. There would have been NO WAY for anyone to have replicated all of that before this point.

Yevon and Yunalesca did basically the only thing they could do to at least pacify Sin for periods of time, however briefly.
