Thread to discuss all things overlord because I have a problem, if you have any questions in regard to overlord hit me up as well!

To start off with did you know the authors stance on air resistance is a long standing idea that didn't start with volume 14s reveal

From a qna:

It’s all right. It’s a physical law of our world that when the going past the speed of sound a sonic boom is created. It isn’t for certain in the New World[mukou no sekai] that sonic booms will be created! What did you say!

Ainz from volume 14 noting air resistance isn't in play:

In this world, acceleration due to gravity did not seem to be affected by air resistance so one’s free-fall velocity could increase infinitely.

Also the author stating the laws of thermodynamics might as well not exist

Q:Maruayma-sensei, I have a query. In Volume 14 it was said there is nearly no air resistance, but if there is no air resistance, everyone will die when it rains, right?

A:The Physical laws are different from our world. Things like the three laws of thermodynamics are disregarded because of magic as well.

Random discussion point I was pondering what ainz would be in the context of dnd class and generally he seems like he'd be a sorcerer with meta magic/and casting from intrinsic power/knowledge rather then study (well and he's known as the sorcerer king). What makes it weird is he's also clearly a necromancer, he has a stupidly long spell list ala a wizard and can learn new spells from corpses. So he's a sorcerer with a wizard subclass and a variant rule on learning spells that requires corpses rather than scrolls.

Doesn't really mean much just a curious thought that hit me recently when trying to fit the authors home brew into dnd proper.

I'm thinking about giving Overlord a try again because I couldn't really get into it in the beginning.

It sounded a bit cheesy, but as I kept watching a few episodes, it was actually cool how the author sets up the plot.

Ainz was also OP as fuck, and I got burnt out quick with understanding the direction of the Anime lol

The anime isn't a bad way to get into overlord it's how I started but I generally recommend checking out the light novels if it peaked your interest (I can link to fan translations/translations in several languages! Feel free to hit me up!). The anime as an adaption cuts a lot of ainz inner monologue which makes his character harder to fully grasp/understand. More the anime makes some very odd changes as the series goes and cuts very important world building bits.

For instance I got through the entire anime originally and didn't know ainz original home world wasn't just a slightly futuristic version of earth. Cause the anime essentially fully cuts the backstory (I think the ova recap movie adds a few lines)

Ainz isn't from a semi future earth, he's from a late stage dystopian hell scape. Imagine cyberpunk, add a hundred years, more scarcity, less body modifications, and the planet generally being so screwed the only plants/animals are held in giant domes owned by the mega rich. Going outside requires a full gas mask and artificial lungs. Meals are nutrient paste and whatever vitamins you need to make up for it. To play games on your pc you needed to inject nanites into your arm and hook a wire into the port in the back of your neck.

Pandoras actors outfit isn't actually based on a world war to german officer uniform, it's based on a group of neo nazis that appeared during the last arcology war. (A war where mega corps and terrorist fought over one of the last bastions of animal/plant life)

Ainz started full time work at twelve after watching his mother drop dead in front of him from exhaustion, a common fate for people who weren't incredibly well off. He only has an elementary school education another common thing for the "poor". He was so used to street orphan corpses they're barely worth a thought in his mind.

Theres a huge thematic overtone that is simply not present in the anime because it doesn't touch on these facets. And thats the facts its incredibly hard to determine where the uncaring nature of a dystopian broken salary man and the uncaring nature of an undead begins.

Ainz choice in race is incredibly thematic, as in many ways he was undead in all but flesh long before his arrival in the strange new world.

Another random talking point ainz occasionally pulls out an item and I really question why he has it, specifically he has this item called Green Secret house, that creates a small building resembling a cottage...This item is far larger on the inside then the outside and is able to adjust its size to fit occupants of any size like most magically enchanted rooms (Theres some real weirdness with size shifting in overlord)

What makes this weird is it's an item that is totally useless to him as an undead, more most of his friends should long have already acquired rings of sustenance which negates the need to sleep/eat. So I don't really understand why he has it just sitting in his inventory. He also has the spell create fortress (A tenth tier spell that creates a large imposing fortress that is bigger on the inside as well) A spell that has no real utility for his character. Perhaps he learned it from a random corpse? It's still a bit odd. Then again according to our information he had access to nearly a third of the spells that existed across the game, odds are he's got some weird ones in there.

One of my best friends has told me good things about this Anime. How good is it?
Depends on your taste tbh, how much do you like villainous characters winning? How much do you like to insert yourself into characters? How do you feel about at time needlessly complicated world building? Ill note if you watch the anime your liable to miss key information, such as the main characters backstory which informs a lot of his behavior in series.

In general Id say give it a few episodes and see if you vibe, if you do then keep rolling, though there are two big events in series that wound up turning a lot of people away in season 2 and 3. If you go in hoping to see evil punished/to see the bad guys get their just desserts...don't hold your breath.

Those qualities sound like One Piece from Skypiea up to Fishman Island (high tension, over the top world building, and relating to the character like One Piece flashbacks), which is prime One Piece. I think I would like it.

Regarding the Overlord, there were various platforms which takes Overlord as supersonic or hypersonic at best. But when confronted about other FTL or MHS characters using trains or slow vehicles, they got silent.

Is it a special privilege of these animes to be hyped up, or am I missing the point?

The only light speed esq thing I remember hearing about overlord is that one mistranslation of braines attack. As for those characters assumedly theirs some disconnect between movement and combat speed. Overlord ironically is one of the few settings where if the main cast were super fast it likely wouldn't break much as they generally favor teleportation which short of going faster then light and breaking casuality is always going to be quicker then traveling by other means.

There is a major misconception among many watchers and readers of Overlord that the story revolves around an OP lich with OP subordinates bulldozers the weaklings. While, the story looks exactly like that on a superficial level, it is not really true.

In the alternate timeline, Ainz came into the New World all alone. He had no Nazarick to protect at all. There he met the princess of Inveria, Keno — who in the main timeliness was known as Evileye— and quickly befriended her.

Now, I thought it will follow the same story where our evil protagonist — Ainz —will have some bad influence on Keno, but I was wrong.

We saw the true character hidden under the mask of Ainz — Suzuki Satoru.

Both Keno and Satoru travelled around the new world in order to find the clue about the vampirization of Keno and her the zombification of her country including her parents. For five years, they explored the world together and there we saw how Satoru was influenced by Keno. It was not like Keno had some strong personality than Satoru, it was Satoru who wished to be influenced.

Remember, he was chosen as the guildmaster of Ainz Ooal Gown because of his adaptable personality and observing nature. Even clementine mentioned that he is learning her moves at a very fast rate like he had a talent for it. Which gives the depth of his true personality. The guy had a a very adaptable personality and mentality that doesn't belong to him. He considers himself weak because he knows that there are beings stronger than him and everyone around him are just too weak.

Following Keno for so many years, he started to look upon her as an equal despite her pathetic classes, skills and levels. He saw her identity as a friend, or person to whom he can openly shares his truth. Because in the world 22nd century, he was already dead when he lost his mother. His world died as his mother's corpse laid in front of him. And he was just less than a ten years old boy. After that, his inner feelings died down and he got a heavy reality check. He started to believe that he was nothing but a cog in a machine. Nobody will remember him, nobody will search for him. Life is nothing, but an emotionless reality.

Until YGGDRASIL happened, he lived an apathetic lifestyle where the corpses of his fellow citizens littered around the Japan and he just ignored them.

He found friends in YGGDRASIL, who taught him the value of life. The reason to live for someone. The foreign concept of friendship that he always neglected as a child's dream. And after they left him the guild, he had Nazarick and NPCs to protect. To save them from all harms. His human desire : to see them last longer than anything in the New World.

Unfortunately, he never felt any warmth or friendship from them. They never considered him as an equal, buy a Supreme Being who was all alone.

He was the richest, strongest and the most important being in the New World. And despite that, he was all alone. His powers can't buy a friend or the feeling of friendship.

The only timeline where he got that future fulfilled is EESS. There, we saw the true Suzuki Satoru.

One of the redditor explained it well. I can give you the link.
