How did ROM SPACEKNIGHT come to be?

Well, it's not as simple as you might think. He was a toy created by Scott Dankman and Co for Parker Brothers, serving as their first venture into making products that weren't board-game based. Originally, he was named COBOL (after the programming language) though was later changed to ROM by Parker Executives. Which, as you might have guessed was short for Read Only Memory.

To build interest in the toy, Parker Brothers licensed the rights to use the character over to Marvel Comics. Marvel, in turn, created a comic book that featured ROM and provided a detailed back-story for the toy, including his origin as well as a rogue gallery of foes to do battle with, including his arch enemies the dreaded Dire-Wraith's.

Spanning 75 issues and four Annuals the solo-series (from 1979 to 1986) ironically outlasted the toy which it was created to support.

Who is ROM SPACEKNIGHT?

A writer and a poet, a man with a gentle soul and an even more gentle hand, it was neither Rom's nature nor wish to become a warrior Space-Knight of Galador. As is the prime directive of all Galadorain's, Rom valued life in all its myriad forms, but with the ever-growing threat of the Dire-Wraith's impending invasion from the Dark Nebula, his pride for Great Galador and the Golden Galaxy over-rode his own self-worth.

Thus, to protect his people and his beloved Ray-Na, when the Prime Director called upon the flower of Galador's youth to sacrifice their own cherished humanity to protect the world they loved, Rom was the first to volunteer, the first to be chosen, and the first to be grafted to a suit of cold unfeeling armor. What emerged from the Halls of Science we're not human, but sworn cyborg defenders of Galador, the Space-Knights.

Then, when the time came, and the Wraith fleet loomed over-head, the Space-Knight's rose to occasion, forming a cosmic line in space they met the enemy's number with wrath, outnumbered yet not outgunned, the battle was fierce, the onslaught seemingly relentless. And when the Dire-Wraith's sensed they we're losing they called upon their own scourge of space, the Deathwing. Many died at the hand of the Dread Swallower-of-Stars, but with their combined might they defeated the demon of the Dark Nebula and rose victorious, with Rom being anointed Greatest of the Space-Knights.

With the enemy routed and the Golden Galaxy protected you'd think the war would be over, not quite, for as long as any single Wraith lives no world is safe from their cosmic pestilence, such began ROM's two century long journey into space, a journey he would have to face...Alone.

What are ROM's powers?

Massively enhanced durability, strength, and speed courtesy of his Plandanium forged armor and cyborg circuitry, unimpeded flight granted by his rocket-pods with the ability to absorb energy as a form of sustenance and the limited storage of it.

That is, of course, without mentioning the variety of tools ROM has at his disposal, stored within Subspace, a realm between the interstices of molecular reality, ROM has three Plandanium forged items he can call upon which includes:

His Neutralizer.

The most powerful device ever constructed on the planet Galador, its main function (as the name suggests) is to neutralize any energy field it encounters, developed as a means to defeat the Dire-Wraith's without actually killing them, the ray it emits is so intense it neutralizes all the energy of whoever is on the receiving end of its effects. Such a disruption in the energy field, however, causes a transtemporal rift to open up between dimensions, sucking the desired target through to the realm called limbo, leaving nothing but ash behind.

Though the energy level required for banishment is not the maximum energy output the neutralizer is capable of attaining, on its highest setting the Neutralizer will kill its target by disrupting all of its vital functions and negating its life force. Rom has to only think of power level he desires, and cybernetic impulses in his armor will recalibrate the weapon.

Naturally, because of its potential for enormous destruction, the Neutralizer is equipped with several safety measures to ensure that none save Rom will ever utilize its power. Including destroying any device used to activate it without Rom's brain patterns, Aswell as sending bone shattering energy feedbacks to anyone who would attempt to fire it.

His Analyzer.

Rom's primary means of identifying shape-changing Dire-Wraith's, the Energy Analyzer emits a beam of ultra-high frequency waves that enables it to detect the molecular structure of any object it is focused upon. To detect Dire-Wraith's, The Analyzer stimulates certain rare earth elements found within the alien's body and causes those elements to emit radio frequencies visible to Rom's visor sensors. Thus, he can detect any wraith no matter the form it has transformed into.

The Analyzer can also scan and analyze the energy of non-wraith's, such as Jack of Hearts and mutants, via electronic impulses, it informs Rom of the individual power potential of the subject it is scanning. He has also used it to trace the energy trails of powerful beings such as his fellow Space-Knight Star-Shine.

The Analyzer has no offensive capabilities, it is a device of detection only. However, the scanning process which bathes the subject in an eerie red field, has been known to be unnerving to certain beings.

His Translator

Rom's universal Translator, enabling him to communicate with any being no matter it's spoken language, within a matter of seconds. The Translator is a highly complex Galadorian computer which was originally programmed with the linguistics of all languages known to Galadorian scientists. Utilizing an intricate program of universal concepts and their verbal equivalents the Translator analyzes linguistics fragments of the hitherto unknown language and extrapolates the structure of that language for Rom to understand.

Once translated, the new language is transmitted and stored within Rom's memory banks. Rom's voice is then translated into the new language.

What will this respect thread cover?

It will cover all of Rom's appearances in chronological order. It will be similar to old FV threads as I will be going through it issue by issue instead of splitting it into sections.

Hope that answers any questions you might've had.

ROM lands down in Clairton, a small West Virginia city and immediately summons his Analyzer scanning a group of people, discovering that two Dire-Wraith's are among them he then replaces his Analyzer with his Neutralizer, banishing them to limbo.

We also discover the name of the distressed driver from earlier, one Brandy Clark.

We learn that the Dire-Wraith's have not only assumed control over the telephone communications of Clairton but have also infiltrated the government. Meanwhile, Brandy after having just watched two men she's known all her life get seemingly murdered, attempts to communicate with ROM rather than flee the scene like her peers. Resulting in ROM taking her to the outskirts of Clairton and utilizing his Translator so that they may speak properly.

It is then, when ROM explains to her that the men he banished we're in-fact not men at all. But Dire-Wraith's in disguise, beings capable of taking the form of anything that lives. Amidst her doubts, ROM proceeds to tell her the Legend of the Space-Knights, so that she might understand better.

That's when we discover how ROM came to be called greatest of the Space-Knights, by being the one to deal the killing blow to the Demon of the Dark Nebula, the Deathwing.

The national guard unit called in by the Wraith's arrive at ROM and Brandy's location, opening fire on the Silver Space-Knight, however, ROM proves immune to conventional weaponry as he ignores tank shells and proceeds to smash them with ease. Even resisting flame, for ROM is a being who has flown near stars.

That is until one of the soldiers, a Wraith in disguise, reveals a weapon unlike any other on earth. A disruptor. A weapon capable of harming ROM, though he endures through the attack and banishes the Wraith to limbo.

While ROM advances Brandy makes a run for the alien weapon, if only she could show it to the commanding officer, she could prove ROM's innocence. However, the other Wraith's get to it first, restraining her and attempting to use the weapon against ROM a second time. They don't get the chance, though, and ROM having heard Brandy Clark's shock turns and banishes the remaining Wraith's to limbo.

In the aftermath, ROM determines this sector of the planet to be cleansed of Dire-Wraith's, and leaves Clairton. While Brandy Clark is left with more doubts than ever before.

We resume our story in Lansing, West Virginia. The second earth town Rom has visited in his hunt of the Dire-Wraith's. Interrupting mobster Archie Stryker's attempt to rob the Laserium Corp, he immediately scans them with his Energy Analyzer, revealing that the kidnapped manager of the Laserium is a Wraith in human-guise.

Their bullets bounce of his cyborg skin, proving ineffective as he advances and swats the rushing mobsters away with ease.

Archie Stryker attempts to stop ROM from inflicting banishment on what he perceives as but another human. Blasting ROM in the back with a Laser Cannon that can quote "slice through steel like butter", which staggers him, causing him pain. Not before he turns around, enduring the lasers beam and stalking forward, ripping it apart with his cyborg strength. However, this diversion has given the Wraith enough time to contact the corrupted Lansing police department.

A cry for help that is short lived as ROM converges on him, easily ripping a steel vault door off Its hinges. All the while Archie Stryker is still confused and unaware of the true nature of the situation unfolding before him.

ROM corners the Wraith, preparing to banish him. But not before he speaks out about the true nature of the Laserium, that being a false corporation developed by Wraith-Kind to get the human population to unknowingly build them the laser components to a massive transmission base. To attract the Wraith's which are still mindlessly roaming space to earth so that they may rebuild and plan for the day when their dark magic and sinister science may be strong enough to once again threaten Galador.

Thus, swiftly brandishing an energy disruptor, the Wraith shoots ROM. While ROM retaliates, pulling his Neutralizer from Its fold in space, he banishes the Wraith to Limbo, but not before it lashes out at the Master Control button. Activating every laser in the building staggering ROM as he activates his rocket pods, flying upwards to safety and escape while the Laserium erupts in flames and smoke. Whilst cops arrive and Archie Stryker looks on in hatred and utter disgust, swearing that he'd do anything to stop ROM from killing another human, anything.

Our story then, switches from Lansing back to Brandy Clark of Clairton, where she is being visited by a doctor for what her family believes is her suffering shock induced delusions.

Brandy, knowing what she saw and heard, seeks clarity from Steve, her significant other. Who only reaffirms her family's fears that she's suffering delusions about ROM, and as they embrace outside of the Clark residence. It's different, she breaks away, assuring Steve that she will be alright and call him later, to which Steve obliges.

And so, as Brandy wanders the yard with her dog Tempest, mind lost in clouded thought and emotion, she is broken from her addled state as her dog Temepst notices someone, something. Inside the Gazebo, that someone being ROM, and as he approaches, so does an uncomfortable silence follow him. For he has returned to Clairton, and more specifically, to Brandy Clark in search of information.

And as he explains his need for information and experience on earth so far to Brandy, as well as his confusion to Archie Stryker's willingness to defend someone ROM clearly viewed as a Wraith. She hurts, did she perhaps hope that ROM had returned for a more personal reason? For when they continue to converse, we pan to see that Steve had in-fact not left, but stayed behind and witnessed Brandy casually conversating with this murderous monster!?

We cut away from Clairton, West Virginia to Washington, D.C. Where a raven roams over the military intelligence building known as Safeguard. Flying through an opened hatch and gliding through a seemingly empty building to a meeting room, one held council by a group of disguised Dire-Wraith's. Where our raven transforms revealing the information that ROM, greatest of the Space-Knights has arrived on earth. Commenting that they will combine human technology along with wraith science and wizardry to crush ROM, which is met by the equally sinister praise from the Wraith's present.

We return to ROM and Brandy Clark, where Steve has stopped eavesdropping and is now attempting to rush Brandy inside the house and protect her from what he calls a monster. ROM finds that he doesn't like being labeled as such, and in retaliation summons his Neutralizer and scans Steve Jackson. Scaring him. And though he doesn't believe Brandy would ever chose something other than a human as her companion, he must make certain.

Simultaneously, the police arrive at the Clark residence. Called to it by Steve, Brandy's parents rush outside to see the distressing scene unfold, as Brandy pleads with Steve to explain that his call was a mistake, that it was an accident. But Steve doesn't relent and continues to assert that ROM is nothing but a killer. And as the police gear up and prepare to launch their attack, ROM exclaims that he will leave this place, that he did not mean to bring violence to her home.

Then, Police Chief Rogers (A wraith in disguise) reaches into his glove box, Archie Stryker still in his custody, as he retrieves a device and connects it to his cars circuitry as he gives his men the order to fire upon the space-knight, who still attempts to explain his case, interrupted by sudden gunfire. With Steven jackson and the Clark family retreating inside, much to Brandy's detest while ROM stands unharmed by their bullets.

But it is when Tempest, Brandy's beloved dog, gets struck in the crossfire, that ROM's wrath is incurred. He grips the wooden Gazebo of the Clark family, ripping it apart and throwing the remains at a police car, inflicting significant damage to it before being struck by a "Bazooka Blaster". A wraith cannon designed to disrupt Space-Knight circuitry, which does as It's name-sake and staggers Rom, causing him pain. He activates his rocket pods flying upwards to escape the disruptor before coming back down and and crushing the cannon.

Which is when Chief Rogers, the Wraith in disguise activates a "Sonic Shatterer" which has been mounted on his police cruiser using the device he retrieved earlier, causing ROM tremendous pain and slowing him as specially tuned Sonic-Waves wash over his being, assaulting his cyborg senses. But ROM, greatest of the spaceknights does the unthinkable, pushing forward and destroying the siren. Commenting that it was a weapon designed to defeat a foe the Wraith's faced two centuries ago.

And while ROM lift's the police cruiser off the ground and into the air, he summons his energy analyzer, washing the car with a red glow. Revealing Chief Rogers true nature while Archie Stryker cowers in fear, not wanting to die without being able to defend himself, not aware that the Analyzer's only purpose is to reveal the truth. Thus, ROM knowing the truth with certainty, rips a door off and tosses Archie to the side while the Wraith begs and pleads for It's life. It's cries falling on deaf ears, ROM refuses to strike any bargains nor deals with Wraith-Kind, just as he refuses to kill them and burdens them with a fate worse than death. Banishment to Limbo, where they can never affect reality or cause anyone harm for eternity.

Summoning his Neutralizer from Sub-Space, ROM launches the car further into the air, taking aim with his Neutralizer and firing, burning through the cars frame and banishing the Wraith inside to the realm known as limbo. The empty vehicle falling into the water below. And as the Clark family and Steve look upon the aftermath in horror and denial respectively, while Brandy begs ROM to tell them that Chief Rogers was a Wraith in disguise, to explain. He starts to speak but catches himself. Thinking that his actions and relation to this woman have already brought enough unnecessary grief and pain to her and her family, choosing not to cause her anymore sorrow, he remains silent and leaves without a whisper. Continuing to wage his unending war alone, a war where he can neither afford friendship nor love, lest he only causes more pain to other than he has already experienced in his life.

Better it ends this way, he thinks. But not for Archie Stryker, who still vows that he will dedicate the rest of his worthless life to hunting down and attempting to destroy the alien known as...ROM!
