Scenario 1: Most Powerful Sentient Weapon that needs a wielder to use its full strength?

Scenario 2: Most powerful sentient weapon that can use its max power and fight by itself?

Bonus: Which sentient weapon has the coolest design?

To be clear I’m not including humanoid robots here even though they can be considered “living weapons”. I’m more thinking blades, guns, etc… that can think for themselves.

Umbra (The Elder Scrolls) - A soul-eating sword that contains a dark spirit which gained self-awareness, and stole a large portion of it's masters power (enough so that most of Vile's infinite sized realm fell into chaos) and strained the Mundus when it entered it; even without being able to manifest most of his power in Tamriel, Umbra was still able to levitate a floating island indefinately and prevent the Umbra-Hist from teleporting it to another plane of existence.

The Staff of Magnus (The Elder Scrolls) - An artifact said to have been created by Magnus himself, and the only known artifact capable of countering the power of the Eye of Magnus, which in turn has enough power to destroy the world (contextually either the entire Mundus or possibly the entire Aurbis).

The Ring of Khajiit (The Elder Scrolls) - A ring which can be used to make on invisible and undetectable, even to godlike beings; however, the ring abandoned it's wielder Rajhat, leaving him helpless before his many powerful enemies.

The One Ring (Lord of the Rings) - The master ring created by Sauron to corrupt and control all the other rings; the Ring grants great power to the one who wields it, and it allows the wearer to become invisible by moving them between to planes of reality, but it will always corrupt; not even the fires of Ancalagon the Black would have been able to destroy it.

Shiny Rod/Claiomh Solais (Little Witch Academia) - A staff with the power to seal or unseal the Grand Triskellion, the world altering magic; the Shiny Rod can take multiple forms, such as a staff and a bow and more; it's capable of opening portals into the leylines; with the belief energy of a few dozen people it was able to scar the Moon, and with the believing hearts of everyone on Earth it was able to resurrect Ygdrasil; when it chooses someone or it's job is complete, it returns to the constellation of Ursa Major; chances are high it's more powerful than the artifacts found in the Horologium Chamber.

Noir Fuel Spirit Rod (Little Witch Academia) - An artificial Shiny Rod created by Croix which feeds off negative emotions, mainly anger & anxiety, even across different dimensions; it's capable of taking multiple forms, and has a magic nullification ability which prevents the use of most magic without its own self-contained source across several overlapping dimensions; it contained far more power than Chariot did when she used the Shiny Rod to scar the Moon, and it can move across dimensions.

Masamune (Chrono Trigger) - A sword capable of harming Magus, and was originally the Ruby Blade, made to harm the Mammon Machine which draws power from Lavos; the spirits within the Masamune can manifest and merge together to create cyclones; the sword was used to cut a mountain in half; the Masamune can be upgraded, and used in the final battle against Lavos.

One of the most powerful sentient weapons in the Star Wars universe is the Darkstaff. So powerful that the dark side of the Force intervened and tried to destroy it. The Darkstaff was able to survive the direct attack. It also sent an entire star system into the future. It also transported Darth Rivan to the future era of Darth Bane through a Force Storm.

Sword of Aeons (Fable) - This cursed blade from Fable harbors a malevolent force that drives its wielder toward greater power through dark sacrifice. While it possesses immense power on its own, its true strength lies in the corrupting influence it exerts over its user, inevitably leading them down a path of darkness. The sword grants its wielder regenerative abilities and a twisted form of immortality. At the cost of his soul, William Black, the first known wielder, gained unimaginable power and eternal life from the blade, power enough to defeat the Court of Blades. The legendary battle that followed ravaged Albion, with the clash lasting for weeks, reshaping the land by laying waste to mountains and carving new valleys during his fight with the Queen of Blades.

Avo’s Tear (Fable) - The legendary counterpart to the Sword of Aeons, Avo’s Tear is imbued with the light and purity of Avo, created to counter the dark influence of its evil twin. It grants its wielder regenerative abilities while being imbued with all the destructive power of Solcius, the greatest Will User the Guild of Heroes ever produced, even before the Hero of Oakvale. Solcius sacrificed all of his Will Power to imbue the blade in order to seal the vortex threatening to engulf Bowerstone, an act that cements the sword’s legendary status. In terms of raw strength, Avo’s Tear rivals the Sword of Aeons, offering the same immense power without the corrupting influence. Solcius’ legacy places him above even Nostro, the legendary Guildmaster whose spirit still possessed enough strength to challenge the Hero of Oakvale shortly after his battle with Jack of Blades, seeking an honorable death after years of torment.

Soul Edge & Soul Calibur (Soul Calibur) -
Soul Edge is a malevolent sentient weapon, powered by the dark entity Inferno. It corrupts anyone who wields it, driving them to madness and malice. The lore highlights its power to influence entire worlds. For instance, Soul Edge can open portals to other realms, manipulate timelines, and even warp reality. In Soul Calibur VI, it’s suggested that Soul Edge can affect multiple universes, reinforcing its status as a universe-threatening weapon. Additionally, the infamous “Evil Seed” event, triggered when Siegfried becomes Nightmare, spreads chaos and malfests people across the world. On the other hand, Soul Calibur, created from purified fragments of Soul Edge, serves as its holy counterpart. While Soul Calibur is primarily a weapon of light, it also has its dark moments, depending on who wields it. In Soul Calibur III, characters like Siegfried use it to fight back against Soul Edge. The Astral Chaos, a dimension shaped by Soul Edge, contains stars, planets, and immense spiritual energy. Abyss, a fusion of Soul Edge’s and Soul Calibur’s energies, manifests as a world-threatening entity. In Soul Calibur III, Abyss causes solar eclipses, triggers volcanic eruptions, and darkens the skies, demonstrating its catastrophic power. This was all achieved by corrupting a sacred site, transforming it into a nexus of evil. Similarly, Night Terror, an evolved form of Inferno, is described as an apocalyptic threat, with enough power to warp reality

Master Sword & Fi (The Legend of Zelda) - The Master Sword is one of the most iconic weapons in The Legend of Zelda series, deeply connected to Fi, a spirit created by the goddess Hylia. Fi is introduced in Skyward Sword as the guiding spirit within the Goddess Sword, which eventually becomes the Master Sword. Fi’s role is essential to Link’s quest, offering analytical advice, calculating probabilities, and revealing enemy weaknesses with precision. While Fi is stoic and emotionless for much of the journey, subtle hints of her growth emerge as she begins to express curiosity and admiration. After Skyward Sword, Fi remains subtly present within the Master Sword across the series, with her presence referenced in Breath of the Wild, indicating that Fi continues to guide the hero through different timelines. The Master Sword is imbued with several divine abilities, making it a powerful weapon against dark forces. It grants immunity to certain dark magic, unleashes destructive air slashes and Skyward Strikes, and can re-establish ancient seals. The sword is revered by powerful entities like Ghirahim, who acknowledges its ability to harm even him. The Skyward Strike is significant enough to activate the Gate of Time, a feat comparable to Hylia’s power. The sword’s ultimate purpose is to defeat Demise, the source of all evil in Zelda, making it one of the few weapons capable of such a feat outside of the Triforce.

Sword of Kas (Dungeons & Dragons) - The Sword of Kas is a chaotic evil sentient longsword with a dark history, originally wielded by Kas the Bloody-Handed, the lieutenant of Vecna. Infused with dark magic, the sword was created to serve as a powerful weapon, but it also harbors its own malevolent will. The sword’s sentience pushes its wielder to destroy Vecna and anything related to him, including those corrupted by the Eye and Hand of Vecna. The weapon has several powerful abilities, such as casting spells like Call Lightning and Finger of Death. It also dominates its wielder if it isn’t bathed in blood within a minute of being drawn, showcasing its insatiable thirst for violence. The sword’s ultimate goal is to bring ruin to Vecna and his works, and it’s infamous for its manipulative nature, often driving its wielder into a destructive obsession

Blackrazor (Dungeons & Dragons) - Blackrazor is a legendary sentient greatsword with a nihilistic, soul-devouring nature. Hidden within the dungeon of White Plume Mountain, the sword’s sleek, starry design is as ominous as its purpose. Blackrazor feeds on the souls of those it kills, granting its wielder temporary hit points equal to the devoured soul’s maximum health. This sword is fiercely independent and sees itself as a harbinger of the void, believing that all energy will eventually return to the negative energy from which it came. The blade speaks in a deep, commanding voice and often pushes its wielder to feed its endless hunger, even threatening them if it isn’t regularly fed souls. Blackrazor’s influence is potent, as it grants abilities like soul detection, immunity to fear, and even casting Haste at its own discretion, giving it significant control over its user’s actions.

Moonblade (Dungeons & Dragons) - A Moonblade is a sentient longsword typically wielded by elven noble houses, passed down through generations. Unlike darker sentient weapons, the Moonblade is tied to the ideals of elvenkind, valor, loyalty, and the preservation of beauty and life. The sword bonds to its wielder for life, and each successive master leaves behind a rune that grants the blade additional powers. The Moonblade chooses its wielder based on their adherence to these ideals, and if the blade rejects someone, they suffer severe consequences like weakened abilities. The sword communicates through emotions and visions, sharing its thoughts and guiding its wielder in subtle ways. The legacy of the Moonblade makes it one of the most revered and powerful weapons in elven culture.

Sun Blade (Dungeons & Dragons) - The Sun Blade is a radiant weapon resembling a lightsaber, known for its role as a champion of light. Although it appears as a simple hilt when inactive, it can emit a blade of pure radiant energy that is especially effective against undead. The weapon is sentient and aligned with the forces of good, only allowing those with righteous hearts to wield it. The Sun Blade grants its wielder various abilities, including bonus damage against undead and a bright flash that can blind foes. The sword often serves paladins or clerics on divine quests, embodying the ideals of justice and purity.

Far from the most powerful in fiction, but still worth mentioning imo is the Fighting God Armor in Mushoku Tensei.

It's a sentient, shape changing armor that greatly empowers the user, the armor itself is also full of weapon and martial arts related knowledge that makes even a novice fight like an experienced master.

Users are unable to feel fatigue or pain and the armor radiates an aura that negates magic to some degree, this also includes healing magic.

It's also a cursed item that supresses the users will more and more until the armor eventually takes over the wearer.

It drains the users life force to power itself and auto repairs any damage it sustains, it also refuses to let itself get taken off by anyone, even the wearer, eventually killing the user. The only beings that can really wear the armor inverse are immortal demons and even they are in danger of being taken over by it if they lose consciousness.

In terms of power, someone who is likely in the continent level range or higher was incapable of taking it off and died to it's effect.

The armor also survived being at the epicenter of an explosion that deleted a continent sized chunk of earth.

The four upper continents were once a single landmass.
