When creating a new zone, the Zenimax team look at various websites that collect materials, play the original game(s) and play their own came. Michael Zenke then creates a document about what not to violate and offers up suggestions for things that people can find a place for. https://www.pcgamesn.com/the-elder-scrolls-online/new-chapters-locations For instance, a throwaway line in a book from an older game is often a good jumping off point for them to expand on the lore.

From Lord of Souls; It is said that Umbra was made when Vile was tricked by a witch called Naenra Waerrr (possible Sheogorath in disguise) into putting a part of himself into the sword, so that it could send souls to him. While it was on the mortal plane, he'd have to embue it with some power. Eventually, the sword (either due to the nature of daedric energies or the human souls which passed through it or by design) gains sentience.

The Elder Scrolls Feats and Discussion

From Lord of Souls, after Umbriel stole a large portion of Viles power, what remains of his Realm (the Fields of Regret) are twisted and unhealthy, with there being unsettling patches that seem more to be 'stains on the sky' than clouds. Similarly, the woodlands are twisted and sickly (and even melted looking), with scents of decay beneath the smell of the wildflowers. Curiously, this realm is compared to the works of the painter Lythandas of Dar-Ei (whom we meet in Oblivion; there are theories that the Brush of Truthpaint is actually an artifact of Clavicus Vile rather than Dibella). As they pass through this realm, they see a creature which changes shape several times, from a bird to a butterfly to a winged caterpillar. With most of his powers missing, Clavicus Vile can only maintain his realm (or at least this world in particular) for around a mile in radius, beyond which it all becomes a shimmering chaos. While Vile says he's just as strong as ever, Barbas disagrees with...

From Lord of Souls, Elhul Sathil with Umbra has turned into a skeletal monster. Despite this sickly form, Elhul possesses immense strength granted by the dark sword. Elhul moves at 'unbelievable speeds.' Elhul's blows bring Attrebus to his knees, and despite Elhul looking as if he weighed only 60 pounds (over 27kg), he feels as if he's made of cast iron. Attrebus tries to stab Elhul, but the sword doesn't even break his skin. Elhul is destroyed by a powerful corrosive spell from Sul, which melts the stone itself. Sul says he was starting to thing nothing would work against him. The sword of Umbra itself is unscathed by this. It takes 20 minutes for the floor to stop smouldering.

From Lord of Souls, when Attrebus and Sul are on Solstheim, a supernaturally cold mist descends from the mountains and covers the valley. Fruth assumes it's a frost giant, however... Sul is soon confronted by Sathil, who claims it was from a frost giant too. However, Sul finds this suspicious... Sul believe's it's Sathil (not a frost giant) who changed the weather in the valley. This is noted as being impressive, and if Sathil is power enough manipulate the weather itself then he can do all sorts of things to them when they're being held prisoner.

Brennus casts a spell that instantly disintegrates at least three wormies (undead controlled by daedra from Umbriel), possibly more. Said spell bursts up from the ground, so it's possible it's some form of lava (from Lord of Souls).

During the Made Up Word Round Up (a discussion on the Bethesda Forums), Numidium is refered to as having the ability to alter the laws of nature and mathematics, to the point that time 'before' and 'after' the Dragon Break can be considered two different universes. This could also explain why even the nature of the cosmos is described differently in different installments. https://en.uesp.net/wiki/General:Made_Up_Word_Round_Up

Umbriel's appearance causes waves and storms to affect the seas, being the end of one poor vessel and the souls within. The effects are compared with a tsunami, but it's something different as they're in deep water (also, the natural disasters that plagued Summerset during the Oblivion Crisis are referenced). Umbriel's appearance is first thought of as being a thunderhead/cumulonimbus, and is accompanied by a clap like lightning, but 40 times louder, which snaps the mast off the boat. The energy Umbriel gives off is similar to that of an Oblivion Gate (even though Martin has shut all gates to Oblivion; at least all non-pact breaking ones). Another shockwave is unleashed (with something 'unbelievably foul' being carried on it), and the ship is destroyed.

Miraaks takeover of Solstheim wasn't his first or only attempt to escape Apocrypha, and during the 2nd Era he made another attempt. He is refered to as the First Servant, and considered a myth even among other ciphers, spinning plots and gathering power. https://en.uesp.net/wiki/Online:Cipher_Agrushna In this attempt, he has had corrupted scrolls placed into Quires Wind (a scriptorium where secrets are bound into tomes) by Cipher Sabinius, which drives many there to madness, both mortal and daedra alike. https://en.uesp.net/wiki/Online:Madness_in_the_Wind

The All-Maker Stones that Miraak are corrupting are the same All-Maker Stones were once used in rituals during the time of the Bloodmoon. These All-Maker Stones are said to be gifts from the All-Maker. https://en.uesp.net/wiki/Bloodmoon:Korst_Wind-Eye The Skaal believe all things to be in balance, and it's from this balance, this Oneness, that the Skaal draw their power. When this balance is upset, the power of the Skaal is lessened. When you have completed the ritual, Korst Wind-Eye can feel the balance has been restored. These stone are the Beast Stone, the Earth Stone, the Wind Stone, the Sun Stone, the Water Stone and the Tree Stone.

Using Bend Will on the All-Maker Stones will remove Miraak's evil influence over them and the people of Solstheim, and restore the natural order. These stones maintain the Oneness of the land. Even if this does not stop Miraak, it would delay his return. https://en.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Storn_Crag-Strider https://elderscrolls.fandom.com/wiki/Storn_Crag-Strider#Dialogue Upon Miraak's death, Frea feels his dark influence has finally lifted from Solstheim. https://en.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Frea
