I could swear that there is an anecdote in which Europeans (I don't remember if it was Portuguese) brought African slaves and the Shoguns believed that they were painted and bathed them a lot to see if the "paint" would fall off. Although it is a quite racist story, it talks about how in Japan they had never seen someone with that skin tone until that moment.
