Man, you go through even a bit of D&D and dudes' reasoning for why Overlord somehow can spank D&D is some of the dumbest shit I've heard.
It's especially insane that he's basically all but ignoring Planescape: Torment which is literally based on D&D and basically has alot of what people state about it at full blast. "You can't use what is said because the word light is in it" dude's arguments have nothing to do with the fact that it has light in the name(Which is ironic as that's exactly what Overlord fanboys do to hype up anything that happens in Overlord, including the fact that the characters are Level 100 in a D&D-lite setting) but actually bringing in actual D&D lore for what exactly the spells and abilities do(Something Overlord is HORRIBLE at in which they precisely give jack and of shit).

This alone gives effortlessly more weight than most spells in Overlord combined.
 
The part about using gameplay mechanics to downplay D&D actually doesn't even work because Wizards of the Coast even came out recently saying that game mechanics aren't representative of the actual story.

Which is its own can of worms but it does invalidate pretty much all arguments made against the verse.
 
tbh I feel like this is a natural thing to assume for pretty much any series regardless of where their actual power level lies. It’s a weird thing to use to downplay in general

Nah, it's still pretty bad to be frank. Kinoko Nasu, for instance, genuinely loves using D&D terms for the Nasuverse including turns when it comes to abilities and otherwise(Even explicitly using ingame terms for FGO when it comes to Skill abilities within the game itself)... that doesn't mean the gameplay mechanics are canon even if the fight itself is integrated within the gameplay.
All that it is means is that they are trying to integrate the gameplay into the story so it doesn't feel off, not that the battles are legit turn-based battles and so on and so forth.

That shouldn't need to be said anymore than Disgaea characters can do insane amounts of destruction... except for the obvious patch of ground they are fighting on.
 
thats what I’m saying. It’s a goofy ass assumption to make for pretty much anything and it’s weird it still comes up in 2025
 

Like, I get this man is basically stating at the end of it all nothing Vlov has shown is anything well past Iskandar... but the issue is that using Jester's statements as a basis just doesn't work to equal it to Vlov... because Ishtar herself is explicitly well past the typical levels of a normal Divine Spirit:
This was done without even having her Temple be fully completed either(and thus being at her actual true strength rather than just the Curse of Ishtar). The issue with trying to put Vlov or any DAA on this level... is pretending that all Divine Spirits are above Servants which isn't true and it's explicitly and easily stated in FGO:
Here, just to throw it out there, Musashi states there are definitely regular Heroic Spirits who can take down Gods(Which is obvious looking at Sigurd for instance).

Which fully fits with Nasu's statements long ago that DAA's and Servants are ultimately on the same tier depending on the Servant and the DAA.

The main thing you can say is that potentially Ishtar is a Chief Divine Deity(She isn't, she is an "Earth Mother Goddess" but she's not in Tiamat's league for extremely obvious reasons) and thus DAA's should stack on that but it's still a major ask considering Jester was very clearly going on about how strong her Echoes was once she started constructing her Temple and Vlov is again not at that level due to being too weak to handle his Principle/Idea Blood at all.

I mean, ToAru as a series only sold 31 million copies from 2004 to 2021, most of those being in Japan. My Hero Academia regularly hits bestseller lists to this day and has put over 100 million copies in circulation from 2014 to 2024, with over 10 million of those being in the US. If you search for the "A Certain Magical Index" novel series on Google trends and compare it to the "Homestuck" comic both series are of similar popularity online throughout time, with Homestuck having a slight edge in the last year. I wouldn't blame someone for not knowing like, Dirk Strider.

Basically I think ToAru is popular but only amongst people who are either Japanese or were particularly weebish in the 2000s, whereas MHA is just like, popular period. One of "the most popular things". You don't see Magical Index posters at Walmart, at least.
 

Where in the comment did I ever dispute MHA’s cultural influence, let alone argue Toaru was more popular when posting about the ignorant western tourist claiming “no one’s ever heard of Accelerator” even in Japan?

All I said was that Toaru’s both an older (and still ongoing) series and that Okamoto’s career first kicked off with Accelerator well before MHA was even a thing and even now among the numerous characters he’s voiced, Accelerator his most famous role, usually determines the kind of characters he’s hired to do ever since with Bakugo literally just him reusing the same voice. and has said it himself it’s also his favorite character to voice.
