You are SHAKÄSTE
tumblr_p4xi5u3OL51uypy4so1_r1_1280.png

One could be forgiven for underestimating this human cleric at first glance. It's easy to see that he is quite far along in his years, relatively frail, and his milky eyes obviously denote his blindness. Make no mistake, however, that this man is not one to be trifled with. Thankfully he is a relatively relaxed individual, notably "chill" and more than willing to give people a chance - he might be blind but he can certainly see what people are capable of. When the goblin rogue Nott stole his coin purse early in their meeting, Shakäste was all too aware of the fact and decided to let her keep it, telling her that although she had earned it in a way that she should know it was only because he deemed it so. His skills as a cleric of the tempest domain proved powerful as he helped the Mighty Nein clear Rill's Mouth Mines of a gnoll infestation and free a number of villagers that had been taken prisoner. Although Shakäste would part ways with the Nein soon after, he would meet them again during their conflict with the slaver group the Iron Shepherds, helping to free a number of to-be-slaves and escaping with them out of the Empire. His services would also be called upon later when the heroes needed family transported some place safe.

"This was a bold move you made. And we wouldn't have made it, we wouldn't have succeeded without you, so I say you earned that gold. But make no mistake—be careful where you put your fingers. Whether you realize it or not, I gave you that gold. People don't take money from Shakäste."

Shakäste has also established a bit of a reputation in a manner of speaking under the name of "Hush" while acting as a member of the Golden Grin, a group of like-minded individuals that were originally conceived as a means of bringing hope, laughter, and inspiration to the downtrodden. The group is believed to be little more than myths and rumors, the character of Hush often dismissed as nothing more than a character in a number of world-renown stories recounting heroic deeds now equally waved off as fiction. But Shakäste knows the truth and he doesn't much mind the lack of acknowledgement. It is a creed of the Golden Grin that what they do is for the betterment of people, not for fame and glory. He will continue to travel the realm of Exandria, along with his hummingbird familiar Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna, and do right by its people. And when all is set right, he would depart with nary a farewell and on to the next person in need.

Behind The Scenes
Shakäste was created and played by guest star Khary Payton, though the character would also be very briefly played by Matt Mercer as an NPC later in the campaign. His name was heavily inspired by Shaka Zulu. Likely due to the extremely suave way that Khary played the character, much of the cast considered him extremely attractive with Sam Riegel saying he is like a "Bachelorette Finalist" and Liam O'Brien calling him "Gray Fox." The cast also greatly enjoyed the meta-ness of Shakäste's Spiritual Weapon, first taking the shape of a bust of Golden Girls actress Estelle Getty and later taking the form of a bust of Egyptian Queen Nefertiti.

very cool

You are SCANLAN SHORTHALT
1EW9Bzb.png

With a smile on his face, this gnome bard specializes in wooing ladies (and lads) and keeping his allies inspired, slinging song and spells from afar. Despite a tragic youth, having never known his father and watching his mother brutalized in a goblin raid, Scanlan always has a cheery disposition. Although he initially only joined up with various members of Vox Machina in hopes of finding a good story to tell, he ended up with a group of steadfast friends that he would die for - and actually does. Although he is often looked at as a source of comedic relief or easing tension in the group, Scanlan proves that he is easily one of the most important members of the group with keeping people on their feet whether it be through inspiration, healing, or his specialty in managing to successfully counter magical spells from enemies, some of which that could very well destroy the entire group in one fell swoop. Although he keeps his personal life and past to himself, he does briefly resent his friends for never bothering to ask him about himself... but it does little to ultimately diminish the strong bond he shares with everyone, particularly the gnome cleric he would later marry, Pike Trickfoot.

Come on, come on, get your Scanlan on. / It's Thursday night, and it won't be long. / Gonna play my flute, gonna play my shawm. / It's Thursday night, and it won't be long / 'Til I get your health up, / Get your health up! / I got all you need. / No, I don't shoot bows, / I don't swing swords, / But damn, I can sing!

Scanlan has a notoriety for being a bit of a horndog, willingly flirt with every woman he comes across and a number of the men as well. His own death and time spent with a daughter he never knew he had would cause him to reevaluate himself, however, and realize how disrespectful and overbearing he had the tendency of being. The gnome would still slip into lewd or inappropriate commentary, but it was clear that he was making an effort to better himself, particularly to the woman he was trying to woo. Pike initially rejected his numerous sexual advances but started to come around as he made more of an earnest effort to get to know her as a person instead of just a hot piece of meat. Scanlan remained close to other members of Vox Machina as well, particularly the twin half-elves Vex'ahlia and Vax'ildan and the goliath Grog Strongjaw. Although he would deeply regret never being able to keep his promise of saving Vax'ildan from a fate of servitude to the deity known as the Raven Queen, he did his best to do right by his other friends: walking Vex'ahlia down the aisle at her wedding in Vax's stead, helping Pike and Grog rebuild the city of Vasselheim that was destroyed during their final battle, and even reaching out to the mother of his estranged child and making amends with having left her pregnant.

Behind The Scenes
Scanlan Shorthalt was created and played by Sam Riegel. Sam has a certain knack for comedy and improv, doing parodies of popular songs or limericks for his various uses of Bardic Inspiration on the rest of the party, a trait that carried over to his character in the second campaign when retelling numerous awful "dad jokes" for the spell Tasha's Hideous Laughter. The only other thing Sam, and Scanlan, was most known for in battle was his luck and efficiency as utilizing the Counterspell spell, having foiled numerous plans of DM Matthew Mercer and making many highly dangerous battles much more manageable with expertly timed counters... most of which were accompanied with sarcastic tones, leading Counterspell to be a bit of a trigger for Matt for a time.

You are DORIAN STORM
cMim1d6.png

An air genasi bard from mysterious backgrounds, he cares little for talking of his past and what his life was before, only mentioning that he had lived a fairly cloistered life which has resulted in him enjoying seeing all sorts of new people and scenery, relishing in the thought of so many different kinds of people living in unity. Even the moniker of Dorian Storm is not one he was given, instead shedding his birth name - Bronte - upon leaving his sheltered home in hopes of finding himself. The adventure he finds himself in, however, is not one he could have ever expected, in but a short time meeting a group of extremely unlikely allies, coming face to face with not one but two deities, making acquaintances with one of the most famous sorcerers and runechildren to exist, finding a city lost to time, stopping a plot to steal the patron of his new warlock friend, Opal... the list goes on and on. Through thick and thin, Dorian has indeed found his place with this ragtag group of would-be heroes and he'd do anything to protect them.

"I don't really care what we do. As long as I'm with you."

Dorian exudes an infectious charm, typically preferring to shy away from violence and confrontation when it's possible. He has also shown that he's willing to go to extreme and dark lengths when it comes to protecting something he considers dear, several times coming close to making a deal with Lolth the Spider Queen so that he could become powerful enough to ensure his ability to protect his new friends. However, Dorian recognizes this in him and ultimately denied the offer of Lolth's gifts, saying that he doesn't wholly trust himself to keep in control if she were to "bless" him. His dedication to his friends is unwavering and he cares deeply for how they view him, visibly hurt and upset when he discovered that halfing fighter Orym questions his motive for wanting to hold a magical circlet that holds Lolth's influence. Dorian's bond seems deepest with the dwarf sorcerer Dariax, the two sleeping together back-to-back frequently and Dorian usually becoming most perturbed when someone crosses him. When it feels that their journey might be coming close to an end, they collectively realize there is a good deal of unfinished business for them to take care of but it's Dorian who says what's on everyone's mind - the only real thing everyone wants to do is stay together.

Behind The Scenes
Dorian was created and played by Robbie Daymond as one of two new players for a spin-off series called Exandria Unlimited. The stage name his character uses of "Dorian Storm" was chosen because of "Storm" relating to the character's air genasi heritage and "Dorian" referencing the musical mode named after the Dorian Greeks, appropriately named the Dorian scale. Both he and fellow newcomer Aimee Carrero said that the experience of playing Dungeons and Dragons with the Critical Role crew left a lasting impression, but also left a particularly nasty habit in Robbie. He has admitted that since playing he has started the dangerous hobby of collecting dice sets, having already spent an exorbitant amount of money on them.

Gimme gimme bro bro
You are PIKE TRICKFOOT
4TzUL2u.png

Don't let the small stature and cute demeanor of this little gnome fool you - she can throw punches just as well as the company she keeps, including a goliath Barbarian, a half-elf assassin, and a human gunslinger. As a devout cleric of the goddess Sarenrae, Pike takes it upon herself to be the protector of Vox Machina, a job she takes as seriously as she takes any task. She is not known to do anything half-assed even if it means sacrificing her own well-being and health. Whether it be through the healing powers granted by her goddess or her rather painful mace, her goal is to make sure that her friends see another day and another adventure. For the most part, Pike is a warm and welcoming person, always willing to show a friendly face to someone when they're in need of it.

We’re going to teach her things, I will put her through school, and her and I together will change the Trickfoot name. But if I ever see any of you again? I will fucking kill you all.

As said, however, she is not one to be underestimated as Pike has never been one to shy away from threats when it comes to her trying to protect her loved ones, even going so far as to threaten members of her own family when they cross Vox Machina the wrong way. Less fortunate folk who have sought to bring harm against her friends couldn't tell you about it as they rarely survive the ordeal. Sadly, this also means that Pike has the tendency of taking on too much upon her shoulders, often far too overly judgmental of herself. After being killed in battle, she was successfully resurrected but came back with overwhelming feelings of guilt and self-resentment, almost leading her down a path that could have shattered the relationship she had with her deity. Thankfully through some prayer and the love of her friends she was able to push her way through the darkness and find her way back to the light. Even after finding herself once more, Pike often feels compelled to internalize any doubt or suffering she's going through, not wanting to worry everyone else. After all, she's the one that's supposed to be taking care of them.

Behind The Scenes
Pike Trickfoot was created and played by Ashley Johnson, however control of her was often given to Matt Mercer as Ashley was actively working on the television show Blindspot as a main character and frequently couldn't make games. This job also conflicted with her character in the second campaign, Yasha. Fans often note the hilarious disconnect between the ways that Ashley and Matt played the character, Ashley often focusing on the character's more "colorful" qualities such as penchant for fighting alongside Grog or visiting brothels or vigorous perverse activity, while Matt focused on her friendly and sweet demeanor.

You are FEARNE CALLOWAY
PwUGqj7.jpg

A faun druid from the Feywild, there is a certain way to the how Fearne's mind works. She often views things from the approach that everything will be okay, concepts of fear and uncertainty being almost alien to her resulting in a calm in the face of any danger... at least when it comes to her own well-being. When it comes to her friends and allies, her sentiments are not unlike a mother bear protecting her cubs. Due to being born from nature itself her concept of morality is one of primal nature, "right" and "wrong" taking on different meanings, a trait she exhibits as she shows no hesitation and no remorse as she - in the wild animal form of a direwolf - hunts down a fleeing enemy and drags him down with his head in her maw with such force that it snaps his neck (and then proceeds to drag his body around until his head comes free, but yeah, that's another thing). As she explains it, it is something she wanted to do so she did it, although she would admit that what made her want to do that is the individual directly threatened people who she very much cared about, making his life and any purpose he served forfeit.

"Time is a weird soup."

This different view of how things work resulted in Fearne being one of the only people who never really questioned the adventure they were on, the things they had to do, and especially the magical circlet they carried that housed the power of a goddess so evil the world tried to seal her away. As her halfling friend Orym would be told, power is just power - it cannot be good or evil. What one does with it, however, is a very different story, but Fearne expresses that the good in the heart of her friends is such an overwhelming certainty that she shows no concern when the circlet is placed upon the head of her human warlock compatriot Opal and she is imbued with power from the Spider Queen. It is also this overwhelming certainty that causes Fearne to make a very important decision when it feels like their journey is to come to an end. Although she was sent to this material plane with a very specific mission by her grandmother to help her home, she did not feel that she was ready to leave her friends and the the thought of it made her so sad. So the decision was as easy as any other she had ever made - she would stay.

Behind The Scenes
Fearne Calloway was created and played by Ashley Johnson. She has said that her previous characters often contained part of herself that resulted in a therapeutic feeling of playing them but she wanted to do something different this time. In creating Fearne, she instead adhered to the philosophy of her friend Travis Willingham - "let's just see what happens." The company Eldritch Foundry, responsible for creating the miniatures for the game, noted that they actually had to remake Fearne's at least four times as Ashley had told them every time that they failed to capture her curvaceousness, a trait Ashley repeatedly expressed during her roleplay of the character in games. They ended up using actress Christina Hendricks as a model before Ashley was satisfied.
