They still do, despite fighting on-par with Jimbe and Yamato back when he was still just a Rookie

and also despite Van Auger, almost certainly an Observation Haki user, basically stating Ace was impressive even without his devil fruit

plus because he didn’t become as strong as his potential implied. Although that’s just because he’s dead
