I think it's an artistic expression, obviously, after the smoke clears, their bodies are basically intact except for the flecks.If normal shells were used instead of 6000 degrees sabot, they would certainly not be able to do this.

wait what the fuck????? Optimus turned into Star Convoy ALSO BY THE MATRIX??????? Like the combination of the Zodiac energy and with the Matrix turned Optimus to Star Convoy in the original Battlestars TV Magazine. Wasn't actually shown that he was empowered by the Matrix aswell, but according to lore wise, he was since in Legends issue 19 following after the events of Headmasters where Optimus died for the second time and Hot Rod became Rodimus again, Rodimus returned the Matrix and became a micromaster, in the toy he reunited with Optimus and the japanese commerical of Return of Convoy likely shows Hot Rod kinda empowering Optimus aswell.

and plus this issue also involves Optimus' revival.

Consider that since Star Optimus' recent AOTP bio even states as him empowering by both the Matrix and the Zodiac.
