What are the worst Retcons in fiction

Marvel retconning Galadorian lore 10 different times in 20 different ways.

You niggas lost Rom's license. Just don't bring them up. It's not that hard.

The entirety of the Star Wars Expanded Universe being made non-canon (not even the decency of being moved to another parallel universe; being made straight up non-canon), so that we could have the Kennedy-Rian-Abrams visions of Star Wars. I don't know if that counts as a retcon, but it should.

On the subject of Star Wars, Karen Travis forgetting that the Galaxy had already fought a race of Force immune intergalactic invaders.

The MCU in Loki deciding that the multiverse, after very clearly existing in Doctor Strange 1, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame...that the multiverse actually didn't exist all that time, free will was a lie (not because of any cosmic force, but because time police who have no right beating even a normal human with a gun come to arrest them) to the point it makes all the heroes achievements worthless, and all so they can...set up the multiverse for future titles. Which already existed. I cannot get over how fucking stupid this is.

I honestly think we kinda dodged a bullet with eu star wars not being canon to disney

disney has proven itself to be so short sighted and unimaginative that it's kinda lucky the old stuff isn't tainted by it

bionicle also has one I hate not because it really changed the story much but because it's just....completely insane and unhinged and added nothing to the lore

so these cool little robot insect brainwasher dudes were the first real villain in the series, they look cool, it was a mysterious arc that wouldn't really make sense for many many years. Lot of nostalgia around them

randomly, Greg Farshety says "they are made from the corpses of light matoran and any time one dies it is teleported to be turned into a Bohrok"

:lolwat

wh-why? what? why would you do this?

he would eventually start giving a lot of things really boring overly scifi explanations as the series wound down, which I also didn't like, but this was by far the most obtuse

Secret mastermind recon. When everything is revealed to have planned all along by some other dude like Aizen or dc with all the crisis being planned by some other entity.

You talking about mastermind the computer?

Usopp finding a new dream at the end of part 1 to be the King of Snipers, and telling Nami he is no longer a member of the weaking 3.

Only to still be a coward, and never mention sniping again And now offically being the weakest member of the crew.

him admitting he was a liar and coward in dressrosa and then turning around trying to fight Trebol and Sugar on his own knowing full well he could die is peak though

and it's a much more organic form of character development for him imo

While this is true, and he is still the 4th and only SH to develop haki. It's still a recycled plotline .

idk, all his other brave moments besides sogeking were basically by accident from Arlong Park onwards, this is one of the only times we really see him completely walk towards death's door because it was the right thing to do

course im biased bc the whole course of events from there is maybe my favorite moment in the series

Just because he forgot Robin doesn't mean he forgot everything inbetween.

Your mind just filled in the gaps. So he knew Sogeking, and he knew the EL incident etc.

The Infinity Gauntlet going from being the chad Jim Starlin era nigh-omnipotent weapon that can easily solo all of the Celestials and most of the Abstract beings at the same time and nearly causing a collapse in the entire Multiverse's reality when flexing it's power with the only weakness being the erosion of the wearer's sanity as they adjust to godhood -> to being the current virgin Hickman era Gauntlet that has less power output than a run of the mill celestial, will kill itself from the strain of trying to stop an incursion and doesn't even work outside of it's own universe.

Marvel in a nutshell

Get a character or weapon and just nerf it as much as you can:trinny

Oh boy I got a few from Naruto/Boruto:

1. Kaguya/Black Zetsu being the true Big Bads the entire time:
Basically removes Madara from play(because god forbid the Uchiha Villain you constantly wanked actually loses), has virtually zero real connection with the series and gets removed from the story just as quickly. And that's not forgetting the fact her existence directly leads too...

2. The Death of Kurama:
Yeah he probably isn't permanently dead but how the fuck does this happen? Baryon Mode, a suddenly pulled out of Kishimoto's ass a new "super mode" which it's literal explanation comes off similarly to how Bijuudama are made but suddenly just kills Kurama, despite the entire point of the Seals onto the Jinchikurri is that they are a literal prison for the Bijuu and such an ability should absolutely kill the user.
It's existence is literally just to further weaken Naruto for the hell of it so that Boruto and Kawaki can further carry the story.

3. MACHINE UPRISING!!!:
You all know this bullshit so I won't go too deep into this... so let's really think this through:
In 10+ years, we have somehow went from Bijuu basically being seen as the equivalent to Nuclear Bombs, the Jyuubi being the strongest force we've ever seen and the Eight Gates... to suddenly some random fucking Androids are COMPLETELY SUPERIOR to most of that created from some random fucking scientist in a random ass cave.
This literally makes Dr. Gero being able to create the Cyborgs/Androids and Cell and making them superior to freaking Super Saiyans look good by comparison.

Kishi loves his Toriyoma tropes right down to Sasuke being the Piccolo babysitter and raising Boruto in place of his daddy :skully

On the subject of the MCU

Thor Ragnarok: "The hammer was only meant to help you channel your power, it was never your source of strength" - Not only because this completely ignores Thor 1 in it's entirety, since the entire plot hinges on M'jolnir very much being his source of strength, but because of how quickly they fucking back-pedaled on it after Ragnarok. Both to give Thor a means to fuck with Thanos and later, to give Jane Thor's powers.

If you're gonna retcon something, at least have the integrity to stick to your fucking guns, regardless of how bad it was.
I actually prefer Ragnarok’s version better. Mjolnir was training wheels for him, he can’t use his power without it pre-Ragnarok
