He genuinely does.
Xavier and Magneto have consistently contested cosmic level threats multiple times in the X-Men. The Phoenix is the most prominent but Omega-level mutants have some the most blatant reality warping nonsense in Marvel, and Xavier and Magento have contested them multiple times.
Just be glad they aren't feeding toaru to Iceman again. Still don't know why that specific match-up keeps happening over there 
There's also that bullshit with The Shadow King, especially with the recent retcon they did to the being:

Bruh. The Phoenix is a multiversal entity dude. It was even able to go against Wanda in House of M where Wanda erased mutants out of existence but the Phoenix kept bringing them back.
