He coached Goten and Trunks a bit in Yo! Son Goku Returns, so him giving Broly pointers wouldn’t be out of place, especially when they’re similar to each other
Especially since Broly is basically a more extreme case of what Gohan went through as a kid: troubles controlling his rage and hidden potential.
Seeing Gohan Beast, Gohan’s full potential and rage all under control, is probably what allowed Broly to figure out how to control his Super Saiyan form through example
