To be honest I always think his jump to insults and the actual insults are OTT with him so them being hard to reconcile isn't new for me with him. He could be leaning into it.

To go into some psychology here I think his comments around Vinegar are genuine in how ingenuine it is. Let me explain - I think he absolutely talked about transitioning in the gender sense first, realised it was beyond the pale, and then tried to dress it up as something innocuous. The way he shifts to being friendlier and then putting on the onus on the target of his insult for not believing him is a form of guilt tripping.

All of that is to say that I feel if he were intentionally leaning into it, there would be a limit to what he comes out with, because internally he would know he's having to manufacture it. His current posting indicates a lack of this awareness, so I would say it means he likely isn't leaning into his persona here.
