Ruin has come to our family. You remember our venerable house, opulent and imperial, gazing proudly from its stoic perch above the moor? I lived all my years in that ancient, rumor shadowed manor, fattened by decadence and luxury - and yet I began to tire of conventional extravagance. Singular, unsettling tales suggested the mansion itself was a gateway to some fabulous and unnameable power. With relic and ritual I bent every effort towards the excavation and recovery of those long buried secrets, exhausting what remained of our family fortune on swarthy workmen and sturdy shovels.

At last in the salt soaked crags beneath the lowest foundations we unearthed that damnable portal of antediluvian evil. Our every step unsettled the ancient earth but we were in a realm of death and madness. In the end I alone fled laughing and wailing through those blackened arcades of antiquity until consciousness failed me.

You remember our venerable house, opulent and imperial. It is a festering abomination! I beg you. Return home; claim your birthright, and deliver our family from the ravenous, clutching shadows of the Darkest Dungeon.

*This game uses detail from the Darkest Dungeon universe - it is primarily based on Darkest Dungeon 1 but certain elements, flavour, characters etc may also have been incorporated from Darkest Dungeon 2 - Explicit familiarity with the source material is not required, but may lead to greater enjoyment and understanding!

    Rules

    - Day Phases will last 48 hours. I reserve the right to adjust this as the game progresses
    - Night 1 will last a maximum of 30 hours, and subsequent night phases a maximum of 24 hours. I reserve the right to adjust this as the game progresses
    - The primary town alignment is Hamlet Aligned.
    - The primary mafia alignment is currently unknown (To most of you!)
    - This game will enforce a zero tolerance policy on actions I consider to be outside the spirit of the game, including but not limited to: ITT sub out threats/requests, retirement wagers, excessive flaming, angleshooting and role PM quoting. Punishment for violation of this rule is solely at my discretion, up to and including replacement without warning and/or modkilling.

    - I will be using my standard Active Time Resolution system for role actions, this will be added prior to Night 1
    - This game will also debut a Twilight system - at the point a lynch is reached and acknowledged, you will have a 5 minute window in which you may post prior to the flip. Upon publication of the flip, all posting must cease.
    - All roles are night use only unless explicitly stated. If you are unsure or feel I have made a mistake/omission, please PM me
    - If you have multiple roles, you may only use one role per night unless explicitly stated
    - Most importantly, have fun! This is a very ambitious game, and I hope my track record affords me the benefit of the doubt that I've gone to a lot of lengths to provide a contest that is, at the very minimum, fair and respectful of your time.
    - Usual caveats apply re: FITZproofing the game - there intentional inconsistencies in content and structure of role PMs, dont use this kind of thing to hunt. Some characters have roles that closely match their flavour, others do not.
    - Setup spec will be extremely dangerous to engage in this game - you can expect a certain degree of overlap in roles
    - I reserve the right to add omissions to this list as appropriate
    - A glossary of game concepts will be provided below - as you uncover more of the mysteries you face, and become more attuned to your task, this glossary will expand and serve as a reference point so that all players can easily locate mechanical information needed

    Sample PM

    Grammaton, the Host
    Vanilla Townie

    1L5013e5.png

Congratulations, you are Grammaton, the Host, The Hamlet Aligned!

You will know the tragic extent of my failings ...

An often misunderstood fellow, you are the host of this game ...

In this game, you have no roles.

You win when all threats to the Hamlet are eliminated.

    Action Priority

As mentioned, this game will follow a sequential action resolution, designed to resolve conflicts and make it clearer how roles will hypothetically interact. The action priority is as follows:

    Reflexive Roleblock / Nexus
    Hide/Commute/Untargetable
    Roleblock *
    Bus Drive / Redirect *
    Framer/Lawyer
    Miscellaneous
    Kill / Poison / Arson
Watch / Track / Follow / Voyeur / Motion Detect

    * If these roles interact in such a way as to create a paradox, such as a bus driver driving themselves into a roleblock, the bus drive will jump in priority and resolve first.

    Stress

"Injury and despondence set the stage for heroism... or cowardice"

This game will test not just the physical resilience of your characters, but also the mental. The hardships you endure over time will accumulate, and ultimately force you to sink or swim.

Stress is measured on a 5 'pip' scale, and in most cases, at 5 pips, your character will face a test of resolve. This is based mostly on hidden conditions, and in the vast majority of cases, will lead to an Affliction. Stress levels will be published during night phases, and also at the beginning of a new day phase. This will take the form of a grid, an example of which is below (Values are purely illustrative)

    Sample.jpg

Each pip is represented by a square, and when the meter is filled ...

    Afflicted & Virtuous
"A time to perform beyond one's limits!"

When most characters reach 5 stress, they will be afflicted - Their will to continue will be shattered, they will lose their role and will potentially be vulnerable to other effects too. In certain cases, however, they may become virtuous - This can potentially turn the tide of battle! Several characters have hidden conditions to trigger this, however you won't be notified until the moment of truth ...

    Additional Rules
    - A 'no lynch' where the clock expires will inflict 1 pip of stress to all players. You must co-operate else you stand no chance!
    - Any player finishing the day with a lower total post count than me will receive 1 pip of stress damage.

    More to follow ...

    The Hag Witch
    Jailkeeper, Into the Pot!

    INTO_THE_POT%2C_TASTE_THE_STEWWWW.png

Congratulations, you are The Hag Witch, Ruin Aligned!

I had collected many rare and elusive volumes on ancient herbal properties and was set to enjoy several weeks immersed in comfortable study. My work was interrupted, however, by a singularly striking young woman who insisted on repeated calls to the house.

Her knowledge of horticulturalism and its role in various arcane practices impressed me greatly. My licentious impulse gave way to a genuine professional respect, and together, we began to plant, harvest, and brew….

As time wore on, her wild policy of self-experimentation grew intolerable. She quaffed all manner of strange fungi, herbs, and concoctions, intent on gaining some insight into the horror we both knew to be growing beneath us. The change in her was appalling, and no longer able to stomach it, I sent her to live in the weald, where her wildness would be welcomed…

A grotesque witch banished to the Weald, you are perfecting your ‘stew’ – there’s only one ingredient missing …

In this game you have the following roles:

Jailkeeper – You may target a player at night and render them untargetable by most other roles, as well as preventing them from taking action that night.
Into the Pot! – If you jail the same player twice in a row, you will badly scald them, rendering them unable to act the following night. A further consecutive jailing will boil them alive, acting as an additional kill, and inflicting 1 pip of stress to all players.

You win when you control the voting majority.

It is now Night 1. You have a maximum of 30 hours. Not all of you are fully intact after the day - Stress count to be updated mid-night.

    Night 1
  • Darkest Dungeon Night 1

Where there is no peril in the task, there can be no glory in its accomplishment...

    Baldwin, the Leper
    1x Martyr, Solemnity

    692423.jpg

Congratulations, you are Baldwin, the Leper, The Hamlet Aligned!

"This man understands that adversity and existence are one and the same."

A former monarch, your selflessness and empathy for those less fortunate resulted in you contracting a terrible disease. Though your body be ravaged and broken, your mind is a redoubtable bastion of focus and determination.

In this game, you have thew following roles:

    - 1x Martyr (You may sacrifice yourself at night, providing regular strength protection from killing actions to all Hamlet Aligned players, and preventing any stress damage that evening to all players also. You will die)
    - Solemnity (Unlike most other heroes, you can withstand the mental anguish of the horrors you will witness, and will maintain your purpose no matter what. You will still accumulate pips of stress, but you are immune to affliction)

You win when all threats to the Hamlet are eliminated

The awful shrieks filled the air as he was set ablaze ...

    Bigby, the Abomination
Human form: Psych up, 2x Retching Bile, 1x Transform
Beast form: Terrifying Presence, 1x Grievous Wounds

    7y7d9ui3i7t91.png

Congratulations, you are Bigby, the Abomination, The Hamlet Aligned!

"Tortured and reclusive... this man is more dangerous than he seems..."

A beaten and broken outcast, ‘gifted’ with a terrible curse – eldritch blood courses through your veins, and to merely keep the beast at bay requires intense concentration. This, however, is a desperate situation, and you may need to embrace the darkness in order to defeat it …

In this game, you have the following roles:

    - Human Form (You begin the game in human form)
    - Psych up (You will passively gain 1 additional shot of Grievous Wounds for each night you forestall your transformation)
    - 2x Retching Bile (You may target two players at night and discharge a corrosive fluid over them, applying the Hated modifier to them for the following day phase)
    - 1x Transform (You may activate your inner beast – this will apply a pip of stress to any player who has previously voted you in the game)

    - Beast Form (For each day phase that begins with you in this form, apply 1 pip of stress to yourself. At maximum stress, you will revert to your human form and will be afflicted as normal)
    - Terrifying Presence (Any player visiting you will receive 1 pip of stress)
    - 1x Grievous Wounds (You may target a player at night and wound them – if not healed by the end of the following night phase, they will die. This will be announced in writeup)

You win when all threats to the Hamlet are eliminated.

All the practice in the world couldn't save her ...

    Margaret, the Musketeer
    Neighbour, 2x Roleblocker

    d6fcb3d8f5eef2875103a2b8982770e8fd04d768a035bf2a8813dcc8fe2523d3.jpg

Congratulations, you are Margaret, the Musketeer, The Hamlet Aligned!

A competitive sharpshooter comfortable in the use of a variety of munitions, you will provide support to the front lines. During this crisis, you have struck up an unexpected friendship - but are they friend or foe?

In this game, you have the following roles:

    - Neighbour (You will share a chat with another player of unconfirmed alignment and identity)
    - 2x Roleblocker (You may target a player at night and prevent them from acting)

You win when all threats to the Hamlet are eliminated.

The lawman's bloodsplattered badge dropped to the floor ...

    William, the Houndmaster
    2x Even-night Cop, Cry Havoc

    Darkest_Dungeon_Artwork_3.jpg

Congratulations, you are William, the Houndmaster, The Hamlet Aligned!

A lawman and his faithful beast - a bond forged by battle and bloodshed.

Accompanied by your faithful wolfhound, you are a noble and compassionate lawman. Probably the bravest of all heroes, you fight in the name of justice, and will uphold the law even in the face of evil you can't comprehend ...

In this game, you have the following roles:

    - 2x Even-night Cop (On an evenly numbered night, you may target a player and learn their alignment)
    - Cry Havoc (If you are slain at night by the forces of evil, your hound will stand vigil and inspire the heroes to keep fighting – this will remove 1 pip of stress from all players)

You win when all threats to The Hamlet are eliminated.

The maddeningly predictable rhythm of a beating heart permeates the mind of all, as the monster in your nightmares continues to gather strength ... (all heroes have received stress damage)

Ratchet has been wounded, and will bleed to death unless healed before the end of Night 3!

    Stress-D3v2.jpg

"As victories mount, so too will resistance"

It is now Day 3. With 14 players alive, 8 vote to lynch. You have 48 hours.

The soldier collapsed from exhaustion, and never stirred again ...

    Barristan, the Man-at-Arms
    Bodyguard, Stamina

    692429.jpg

Congratulations, you are Barristan, the Man-at-Arms, The Hamlet Aligned!

The raw strength of youth may be spent, but his eyes hold the secrets of a hundred campaigns.

A decorated soldier crushed under the weight of all the men you have foolishly sent to their deaths as a former military officer, you are on a quest for redemption, and will act as the vanguard against the forces of evil …

In this game, you have the following roles:

    - Bodyguard (You may target a player at night and protect them from regular strength killing actions. You may not target yourself)
    - Stamina (For each use of your role after the second, you are fighting only on will and determination alone – each protective action will now cost you 1 stress pip)

You win when all threats to the Hamlet are eliminated.

She had plundered one too many tombs ...

    Audrey, the Grave Robber
    2x Commuter, 1x Gravedigger

    Meet-Darkest-Dungeon%E2%80%99s-Grave-Robber.jpg

Congratulations, you are Audrey, the Grave Robber, The Hamlet Aligned!

"Absinthe & plunder – what more could a lady want?"

A nimble combatant with a taste for the strong stuff, you use a variety of tools to accomplish your goals. A former aristocrat, you murdered your abusive husband in an act of detached self-liberation. Forsaking your family name, you donned your best coat and embarked on a life of independence … can you possibly redeem yourself here?

In this game, you have the following roles:

    - 2x Commuter (You may fade into the shadows, rendering yourself untargetable for the night)
    - 1x Gravedigger (You may target a dead player and take any remaining shots of their role, to a maximum of two. If targeting a player with a killing action, you may only take one shot. If your target has multiple roles, you may select which one you wish to take. You must be able to identify the body)

You win when all threats to the Hamlet are eliminated.
