Death Battle Discussion

How are either of them "edgy" or "black-coded" for that matter?
I could see calling Shadow edgy, at least for his own game but not Knuckles.
Well I see a lot of fans of both their respective franchises here in the US call both characters "black" in the culturally symbolic or memetically humorous sense, since I read somewhere that Knuckles was originally supposed to have a Jamaican accent in his debut or development stages as a character and the whole "Rastafarian" thing.

And for Piccolo, I guess it's based on the popular headcanon among African-American fans of DBZ that he stands out from the rest main cast of Dragon Ball Z as a stand-in for a "token" racial minority character due to his physical appearance being different than the humans and saiyans in terms of both color and morphological traits as an alien species (Namekian).

Personally, I never saw both characters as "black" until I saw posts like these from Facebook and Discord:

Just my observation.

So people trying to read more into it that is actually there, that's about what I thought. :heston

Piccolo and Knuckles are near universally seen as black probably because of their voices. It’s just a widespread phenomenon. You can go pretty much anywhere on the internet and find people who see them that way. Which is funny because neither of their VAs (aside from Idris Elba now) are black but I’m ngl I’m one of them I can’t unsee it

If Piccolo wasn't universally seen as a black-coded character I don't think people would have been as offended on Twitter when that episode of Daima revealed the Namekians' origin.

I know the subreddit hates this match-up but I think it’s a decent one, Piccolo’s only other mu is Magus and Knuckles has no decent alt (Juggernaut is a bit of a stretch and not that interesting to me)

Pretty much

Only English speakers see Piccolo as black, the rest of the world doesn't.

While the majority of Death Battle's audience is English speakers, there will probably be more than one person who isn't from the US who will be upset when they find out.

Juggernaut only works with Archie
Magus is ok but idc for him
Piccolo vs Knux is fine in a general aspect
But suffers on the fact Knux hasn't done shit in the modern era in terms of relevance and scaling

I mean, the OST for the Knuckles stages in the Adventure era probably had a lot of impact on that too. Every Knuckles stage in SA2 had that 90s style rap in the background and his theme song in those games was a blend of rap and R&B; you don't hear those tracks and associate it with whiteness.

Like I said, it's either more of a cultural headcanon thing or a lighthearted memetic thing here in North America.

Yeah I'm a member of a group of racial minority-Americans myself and I never saw "Piccolo" or "Knuckles" as "black" or any other human "ethnicity".

Anyways:

Finally watched Galactus vs Unicron.

It was pretty wild, chaotic, and intense to watch.

I was rooting for the Galactus fella and glad he won. No disrespect to Unicron.

But it still makes me wonder, is there anyone on this board who disagrees with the verdict?

I only sort of disagree with the verdict. I think Galactus has plenty of angles to argue for a W, I just don’t think the DB team actually understands Transformers scaling very well so a lot of their basis was misinformed. For example one readon they listed G winning was “Marvel has infinite multiverses and Transformers had one” which just isn’t true lol. But they’d have had to a much deeper dive which for their TF videos so far, they haven’t done.

Given the difficulty of really measuring any multiversal series against each other accurately though I don’t actually think there’s a clear winner, and definitely don’t think it’s as one sided as a lot of people do. But I’m extremely biased towards TF and have probably done more research into its scaling than anybody on the internet barring a very small group at this point

1. They did pretty much downplay Unicron. They only really put him at universe level while Galactus was put at infinite multiverse level.
2. The Scryer feat they used was taken out of context since their feat was only mentioned to destroy the marvel universe and over time Scryer's and other realms if left to fight out for an indefinite amount of time)
3. Galactus can avoid the affects of the UN by hiding in another dimension but so could Unicron since he can just hop to a void of literal nothingness.
4. If you want to go by the angle of both cosmologies being infinite and even if you high end Galactus to being infinite multiverse level True Unicron would still have the edge in DC since he ate/absorbed the entire previous iteration of the Transformers multiverse and 20% of the current iteration meaning he would always have a slightly higher edge in dc
5. Galactus didn't create the UN so he can't just conjure another one if he loses it, it was given to him by one of the Watchers who invented it.

Galactus could arguably win with devouring/absorption (as shown in the animation) or any number of power cosmic hax but they don't really discuss those avenues as possibilities, their go to argument was the UN

1. if the UNs effects can be escaped by jumping dimensions, unicron should be able to avoid it comically easily, two of his biggest things (even beyond being really really strong) is that hes can jump between dimensions and is really really ungodly fucking hard to kill

2. as mentioned before the tf cosmology got lowballed, as did unicron kind of

3. not really scaling related but i honestly just... do not like the fight set up. haha space food fight is funny but it really isnt interesting to me, and i feel like there were much better avenues to show the personalities of both combatants and better contrast galactus "force of nature, i do what i must do to survive" vs unicron "i am going to beat you to death"

So from what I gathered so far from you guys: the outcome was mostly correct but Unicron got downplayed and lowballed to death along with TF cosmology itself?

And is the fight itself still closer and fairer than Superman vs Goku on the same show? Just curious.
