Escaflowne is a very good looking show (Sunrise in the later half of the 90s made some incredible looking shows) and I think Escaflowne itself has to be one of the best mecha designs out there. But it suffers from its overdose of shoujo overtones (and everything those entrail) and a weak end game. I haven't seen the movie but apparently it's different to some degree.

Yea the end game is weak. they couldn't keep the main guy and the female lead together like most shoujo in the 90's.

Oh and for some of the more recent stuff, Back Arrow is actually a fun show.

Not amazing like the ones i mentioned,but was a surprise sleeper for me out of last year's animes.

Tho tbf my idea of OUCH my wallet is Perfect Grade Gundam kits

Eureka Seven: Psalm of Planets (my all time second favourite)
Promare (my all time favourite anime movie)
Gridman Universe (toku for the most part, but it features mecha so I'll count it)

Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet
GaoGaiGar
Heroic Age
