Mass claim is supposed to be a tool town has to catch scum. Doing it d1 just outs town's roles to scum, there's no strategy to it. Here it makes sense because town is in a position to do so (not overly dependent on night actions, powerful roles already outed).
 
D3 with 14 alive is lazy though, just saying
