Could have just had him retreat into himself and be carving statues of the fallen or some shit, or had him want to stay in the past before everything went to shit. Or could have had him become obsessively protective of the Asgardians to the point he wouldn't work with the others at first, though that might have conflicted with Tony's thing.

Them not playing his depression seriously was the main problem for me. Even when he saw his mom again they couldn't resist making jokes :mjlol .
