As for people always bringing her up. It's almost like people knew her and the main character is her son, and Harry is often the one who asks about her.
People seriously need to stop throwing the term Mary Sue around willy nilly and actually learn what it means. Not saying Lilly is a great or even a good character, but she is definitely NOT a Mary Sue.
I mean she barely features in the story so.

If anything James gets brought up as much if not more than Lilly, like him being a good Quidditch player, the stuff with the Mauraders, the backstory with Snape etc.

Even if it wasn't SOLELY on her, she still prevented the main character from being murdered as a fucking infant. Thus helping to reduce Voldemort to a massively weakened state that enabled the wizarding world to get into a position to be able to fight him better the second time around.
