furman actually wanted every transformer to be what would be considered non binary, back in the 80s, and IDW’s comics actually mostly stuck with this in the 2000s (although…a lot going on there, hard to explain concisely but in typical transformers fashion, it had a lot of weird unforseen side effects and plot points)
so this isn’t really anything new for TF, even if the writing is a bit clumsy
