To Aru Majutsu No Index Feats/Discussion/Analysis Thread - One Othinus To Rule Them All

Since I’ve been on a role about ITEM lately, I’d like to hear other people’s thoughts about this

The Index manga threw a slight retcon in regards to Frenda.

Index manga made it so Gokusai used her ability to get the information out of Frenda about her team’s hideout rather than her spilling the beans herself to save her own hide once she was captured

Personally, I didn’t think it was necessary to make Frenda an outright victim of this based on how Railgun and now the ITEM spin-off establish her character.

Morally conflicted: someone who was able to make friendships with others but those bonds only ran so deep since she valued her own life more than anything

Misaka threatening to end her life was all it took for Frenda to sell out her friends (had her tongue not been numbed by an earlier shock from her) and later on, she at least contemplated using Saten as a decoy or abandoning her to get the sniper Yumiya Rakko off her tail.

Throw that in with her being a sadist that enjoyed and made a game taking the lives of people she was assigned to kill and this was all her own actions and karma finally catching up to her, so there was no need to make her a victim

She had that syndrome where when a character becomes popular in Japan, they washed her face.

It's bad, but it's not the only work from Japan where something like that happens.

I did like how the manga at least made this kill look very personal for Mugino compared to Index III. Here, she was pissed at being betrayed and nearly killed for it.

Aligns with how much killing Frenda wrecked her psychologically and her later admitting that she regrets doing it.

Also, this adds a bit of a plot hole.

Frenda could have easily explained to Mugino about the Esper in Kakine’s group that messed with her mind and Mugino would have connected the dots and knew it was Gokusai, whose power she knows of and does everything possible to avoid running into her because of when she warned the group about her earlier in this same arc.

Instead of just running away like she did which was pretty OOC for someone whose normally pretty level-headed in life or death situations.

That's ridiculously insane. Isn't the average district in AC about 4km in radii? He's basically shooting from over the horizon.

He sniped two targets, one from behind cover

While not even being in the same city as them

Mugino’s butler making a trick shot on targets from a whole city away.

God help Hamazura if this man finds out what he did to his madame

:wow
That bullet was probably going at hypersonic speeds, the distance is quite high, the question would be to measure the time frame with the panels.

Man was factoring everything from wind currents, timing the shot to make sure the bullet slipped past at least one moving windmill, and even knowing when the bullet would start to descend so that it could hit that women from behind cover.

Golgo 13’s got nothing on this old man

A bit sad though given he personally raised those two maids like they were his own until they turned out to be traitors

Something I’m wondering about: There’s only one completed arc for the Railgun manga to adapt which is Jailbreaker with the Tokiwadai flashback arc still ongoing

Has me wondering if their going to go back to the usual set up as the first two seasons: First half will be adapting manga material while the second half is an anime-exclusive filler arc both treated as canon and part of the timeline and made to tie up whatever loose ends there are from the first half and provide closure for certain characters whose fates were uncertain in the manga

They may adapt both arcs and already know how it will end in the manga or they may invent an original arc as happened with the first two seasons.

I’m leaning towards the latter

Probably a filler arc revolving around Kimi and / or other Holistic Espers.

There’s no morally conflicted, sympathetic Academy City researcher whose fate is left hanging in the manga like Harumi in Railgun Season 1 or Shinobu in Season 2 this time around

I was thinking potentially a Railgun filler arc around ITEM as a sort of promotion of the ITEM anime

But at this point in the timeline, Frenda is….not all together and Mugino is MIA

And while on the subject of adaptations, is the ITEM anime going to adapt exclusive parts of the manga?

The sniper scene I posted with Mugino’s butler as well as the aquarium fight were new content the manga added as a result of a little mini-arc that was made

But that’s about it given it’s only 13 chapters so far while the light novels obviously have much more content to work with
