To Aru Majutsu No Index Feats/Discussion/Analysis Thread - One Othinus To Rule Them All

And while on the subject of adaptations, is the ITEM anime going to adapt exclusive parts of the manga?

The sniper scene I posted with Mugino’s butler as well as the aquarium fight were new content the manga added as a result of a little mini-arc that was made

But that’s about it given it’s only 13 chapters so far while the light novels obviously have much more content to work with
:whatevs

“Mugino failed to kill the target.”

“Ugh.”

“She was so irritated by the soldiers running around that she knocked one down, climbed on top of him, pinned him down with both hands, and fired her Mugino Cannon from her mouth. Unfortunately, that gave our real target time to escape.”

Frenda and Kinuhata were very glad they hadn’t been present for that, but they didn’t dare say so.

“Mugino is not happy and blames you two for crashing and failing to set up a perimeter. She says you’ll need to be punished if you let our target escape, so consider yourselves warned.”

“Ehhh!? In the end, that means she’s going to tie up our ***** with ****** , cover our ***** with grated yams, drag us out onto the high-level balcony where there’s no escape, and spend all day ****ing us like that! It itches more than it hurts, but it’s still hell on Earth!!”

“Yikes, girls are super ruthless with each other, huh?”

Frenda and Kinuhata scrambled to their feet and got back to work.

Can’t tell what’s funnier, the image of Mugino firing a Meltdowner from her mouth like she’s Godzilla or the freaky shit she does to her subordinates for failure according to Frenda

:hestonpls

Hello. I am Hanatsuyu Kuchikusa the Converter. I believe you called for me.”

“Kinuhata, I called her here out of my own pocket, so open the door and let her in. This is going to be our hideout, so this isn’t like cleaning up a corpse from the side of the road. The usual delinquents said they couldn’t completely get rid of the smell, so I had to hire a higher grade of worker for this one. I don’t want any trace left of this guy.”

Mugino made it sound as casual as letting in a mover to transport their furniture.

“Hm, hm♪ Now, I need to work hard if I’m going to support my family. Hee hee. Look, I have my cute twins as my phone’s wallpaper. I’m training them in the family business.”

“In the end, are you serious? They’re no older than my sister. Sure, I’m spending money I made on criminal jobs to buy clothes for her, but this is different.”

“The two of them are learning all the necessary skills in a sterile lab right now. They still have a long way to go before I can let them take on actual jobs, though. They just don’t have the necessary skills. Or really, they’re far too destructive, so they need to learn better control or how to apply the brakes.”

Anyone whose read GT3 would know why this woman is raising massive red flags

That’s what I love about this series.

The more you’ve read. The more Easter eggs like this you pick up, showing everything in this franchise is connected to some other story arc in one way or another

no wonder I couldn't access them roughly 7 or so hours ago (I was trying to find OT3 to bring up Touma only getting knocked out by Misaka's lightning)

And finished ITEM volume 2

REALLY hope the ITEM anime is 24 episodes like Railgun so they adapt this arc as well.

In many ways, I liked it better than the first. Namely now that new girl from the first volume got her story, this one could focus more on the core ITEM members we knew, and it gave us some very good character development from all 4 of them but especially Mugino and Frenda

Also, the ending in this volume is perfect for concluding the anime. I’m sure fans will appreciate this ending’s irony.

“I defeated that villain and protected the city and this is the thanks I get!? Are you saying I brought this on myself!? Is it supposed to be my just desserts!? But someone had to stop her. She really was a step away from completing Angelica. We were the only ones who could have stopped that villain!! So why does it have to lock away my future? You work and you work, but this world doesn’t reward you for iiiiiiiiit!!”

The girl burying her face in Frenda’s chest was shaking intermittently.

She was sobbing.

And sniffling.

This was no more than a girl who had hit a significant roadblock in her life.

“…”

Frenda understood the pain of having your path as an esper blocked off. As a Level 0, she had been faced with that one right at the starting line, so she knew just how merciless and unforgiving that precipice was. If anything, she may have been lucky she had faced it and gotten over it when she was still little.

What did it matter if it was ugly?

If they couldn’t open up to each other like this, they weren’t true teammates. Item trusted their lives with each other, so Frenda had to view this display of vulnerability as growth.

Ainame Caroline had said Mugino would never grow past this point, but Frenda refused to accept that.

Go to hell.

Go to hell, cruel world. Then what do you call this miracle happening before my eyes?

This wasn’t an issue for Mugino alone.

If all of Item worked together as a whole, they had endless potential for growth. So it was up to Frenda to help support Mugino here.

She had to repay Mugino for the trust shown by letting her see these tears.

So…

“It’ll be alright, Mugino. We can all get stronger together.”

Frenda Seivelun gently hugged the lonely girl who was working so hard to silence her sobs but continually failing.

She leaned toward Mugino’s ear.

And she said something she never should have.

She spoke the fateful words that could become “one of many factors” down the line.

In the end, I swear I will never betray you.

The #6 Level 5 is a recurring theme in the ITEM spin-off as the “Dark Side’s Bane” who takes out anyone in Academy City’s underworld who takes their crimes too far with 100% certainty.

Like their Toaru’s Equalizer. ITEM is regularly warned not to do anything drastic enough to get their attention as even Mugino wouldn’t escape a confrontation with them unscathed and just their reputation alone influences both volumes so far.

I don’t know, I feel like Kamachi is trying to gas this dude up after their grand intro with Touma ended with Touma punching their lights out rather anti-climactically in GT2

Still, looks like Kamachi is setting things up for a confrontation between the #6 and Mugino so I’m hoping there will be more to their powers than what was shown.

Also really like how well ITEM’s team compliments each other.

Mugino is really good at figuring out her opponents gimmicks but is nonetheless at a loss of what to do when she can’t just blast a hole through her opponent as was the case with both final villains. In both fights, it’s a group effort to edge out a win

Nice little change compared to Accelerator, Kakine, and even Misaka to an extent.

Accelerator and Kakine basically faced no real opposition to the threats in their own spin-offs. Misaka is not as invulernable as them but even then, she easily beats almost every opponent on her own while at most, just needing to get creative with her powers to win

Wait until bruv reads OT2 and realizes the anime skipped the entire sub-plot involving a homunculus of Aureolus gone loose

Real shame too since this was one of the few baddies we wouldn’t see push Touma to the point of bring out a rare murderous side to him until freaking CRC himself over 20 years later when he murders a school girl right in front of him.

Touma, who normally forgives anyone and settles for stopping a fight once their beaten, continued to relentlessly pummel this nigga well after he was already down before strangling him with his own gold chain and only stopped himself when the homunculus started pleading for his life.

What’s everyone’s thoughts on Gunha, the only remaining Level 5 whose properly debuted getting a spin-off?

Depending on how well Mental Out does, Kamachi and Nogi have expressed interest in doing one.

I’d of course read it but I also see why Gunha is the last one now to have gotten one: IMO he’s a character whose good in small doses since he doesn’t really fit the rest of the setting which is the whole point of his character. Also I think the sheer mystery of his powers and potential kinda get ruined if their ever properly explained through a spin-off

It could be viable in a short shonen-style spin-off, in which Gunha faces an evil he doesn't understand, although the dynamics for it to work would probably involve either inventing a character to counterbalance him or adding another secondary character, for example a girl from Judgment.

Or Junko.

NGL, Astral Buddy made me ship these two
