10 Problematic One Piece Details Older Anime Fans Just Ignore

10 - One Piece Treated Alvida Poorly & Like a Joke
Literally the first villain in a saga where Luffy kind of goes ham on every villain to different extents.
At least Alvida got the dignity of being taken out by a named attack, Morgan didn't even get that. :maybe

Or is this concerning the fact she's a fat ugly women who is acknowledged as such and only gets seen as good looking when she slims down post-eating devil fruit, :jordangif
8 - Shirahoshi Was Only 6 When Vander Decken Set His Sights on Her
Bad man does bad things, gee who would have thought?
5 - One Piece’s Main Cast Lacks Racial Diversity
They literally all have different canonical nationalities according to Oda, there's a reindeer and a Fishman. How much more diversity do you want?

Yes I'm aware what they actually mean is that there's not enough black people on the crew. It's not that it's NOT diverse, just that it's not diverse in the way they want it to be.

1 - One Piece Boa Hancock Stops Being Intimidating the Moment She Falls in Love

I would say it's less than that as it's when her backstory is revealed and she was one of the prisoners of the Celestial Dragons alongside her sisters. Kinda hard to make her be intimidating after the fact when she and her sisters was their playthings in many cases of the word...
Atleast they didn't go with the "CD-Call/Lily Orchard/Lily Pete" insanity of pretending that victims can't be abusers bullshit.

3 - One Piece Has a Problem With Sexualizing Child Characters

...I don't even know when this ever happened...

4 - Sanji Doesn’t Treat Women as Well as He Thinks He Does in One Piece

How is this a problem... when the show itself states it's a problem on multiple occasions? The only thing that happens in the end is that it's Sanji's core character flaw and it will never be addressed... but not ALL core character flaws need to be fully addressed, characters can have flaws that stick with them forever or gain new flaws, that's what makes them human. Sanji just having one of the most insanely stupid ones in a world where some of the strongest beings in the world are women... it's basically a deathmarch waiting to happen eventually.

Heres their reasonings on stuff
10 - It's only when Alvida's return makes her more prominent in the series by working with Buggy the Clown that she's suddenly made into a beautiful woman. Although the message may not be intentional, the idea that women can only be important in the story if they follow societal beauty stands is heavily implied. The one good thing that comes with Alvida's transformation is that she genuinely doesn't see herself as any different from before and is content with herself either way.
8 - Shirahoshi has spent a significant portion of her life locked away in a tower because Vander Decken decided she owed him her love. He has done nothing but torment her as she's grown up. She has been terrified of him for as long as he's threatened her. This has been happening since Shirahoshi was 6 years old. The fact that Shirahoshi rejected him because he's not her type feels underwhelming. While a perfectly valid reason to reject someone, that doesn't compare to what he deserved for everything he's done to her. She may still fear him after all these years, but the anime fails to properly address how disturbing Vander Decken’s actions are.
5 - Usopp and Robin are the easiest examples of characters getting paler skin tones as the story goes on. The argument has been made that they never had dark skin in the official manga colors, and the anime is just reflecting the manga more over time. However, that doesn't change the fact that neither of these characters look like they originally did. Usopp is drawn with traits that anime especially associates with black characters, but his exaggerated features fall in line with racist stereotypes. The fact that Usopp is from "Africa" when all the other Straw Hats would be from specific countries doesn't make the handling of Usopp's race any better. That he specifically has gotten so much paler as the anime goes on has nasty implications.
4 - The idea of never fighting a women is quite antiquated and sexist. While it stems from various beliefs throughout his childhood, it isn't an admirable quality. This is typically treated as a character flaw in the story, though. However, Sanji's simultaneous subservience and creepiness towards women are only considered quirks when they're really damaging behaviors.
3 - Jewelry Bonney has been sexualized since her introduction. However, back then her backstory likely wasn't developed. This problem is only made worse when her greatest moments of sexualization come during the same arc where he true age is revealed.
Bonney may spend her time disguised as an adult, but she's only 12 years old. Therefore, she should never have been shown in a sexual light. Scenes that are fan service become very unpleasant with her actual age in mind.
1 - Boa Hancock stood as a unique figure as the only female Warlord. She's a dangerous and well-respected pirate who uses the fact that she's the most beautiful woman in the world as a weapon against her foes. She also leads and protects the all-women Kuja Pirates, even if she isn't a kind leader. However, many of these qualities are reduced to secondary traits once she falls in love with Luffy. Her falling in love with him in an interesting turning point to her character that clearly relates to both her trauma and role as Amazon Lily's queen. However, the qualities that make her such a great pirate get cast by the wayside when she only focuses on marrying Luffy.

As OG stated, Big Mom literally shits all over Number 10 which really shows these people barely watch One Piece...

Number 8 is even more ridiculous because Shirahoshi was sheltered even primarily BECAUSE her mother was killed and her father basically kept her locked up and alot of Van's attempts to kill her failed miserably, no shit she's not gonna be as harsh as him especially as she's Otohime's daughter who basically saved a Celestial Dragon despite being SHOT BY HIM.

Ah yes, because Africa means that everyone who lives in it must be Charcoal Black and nothing else... just ignore the existence of Afrikaaners or people who are born mixed in Africa and really? We have to have skin color matter in fucking ONE PIECE?! Where you have actual different races of people and beings from the Skypeians to Mermen to literal fucking Moon People?! Just shut up
:miketime

Okay so Jewelry Bonney being sexualized is the issue... despite Jewelry Bonney's actual age only being stated RECENTLY(Like the end of the Egghead Arc was only 1-2 months ago) and her age was only stated around the climax of the arc. This is even more hilarious given she has a Devil Fruit that basically makes the actual concept of her age worthless because... she can literally forcibly age, de-age and even turn herself into freaking NIKA AT WILL. I think there is no "Sexualizing Children" when Bonney is the only example and there is still a justifiably dark reason for it.
EDIT: I'm not 100% Sure but isn't it whenever Jewelry Bonney uses her Devil Fruit to age herself, she also mentally ages alongside her physical age? Because that makes trying to put her at her "actual age" even more into ridiculous territory in the first place.

Finally... no? Boa Hancock is still extremely dangerous even after falling in love with Luffy with her performance in Marineford and even having Blackbeard go no chances with her despite being able to physically overpower her because her Devil Fruit is just that broken. She even has Conqueror's Haki for fuck's sake and I would not be surprised if Oda later just has her be able to fight with it just like Luffy and the late game enemies. Yeah, her love sickness for Luffy remains but none of that is personally taking away from her character at all(Even her choice of going to Luffy after Blackbeard nearly killed her can also be easily put around that she's putting herself and her island under the protection of an Emperor since her status as Warlord is forever gone).

As OtherGalaxy said, Big Mom says hi.

Also Alvida is very much still a minor comedic character at best even after her devil fruit induced make-over. The best she can realistically hope for in terms of importance in the story, be her ugly or pretty, is being an end-game fight for Coby who is himself a pretty minor character.
8 - Shirahoshi has spent a significant portion of her life locked away in a tower because Vander Decken decided she owed him her love. He has done nothing but torment her as she's grown up. It is literally in character for Shirahoshi to NOT hold a grudge over other people's actions. At least that's how she interpreted her mother's message and we see her being willing to overlook far worse things such as with Hody.

The fact she doesn't let this shit get to her and give the man more power over than he deserves is actually pretty impressive really.

I get what they mean with the Usopp thing but Oda has other black or brown skinned characters drawn normal or 'cooler' and if anything Usopp's lighter complexion makes the stereotype less offensive than how certain other series used to draw black people. When he draws someone like King who's explicitly brown skinned he doesn't have any of the associated traits because the goal was for Usopp to look goofy not to be a racial caricature. Look at Mr. 1 and Mr. 5 for example.

like it's not even mentioned why she can do that

hasty generalization moment, quite literally

Weird take given Accelerator fought an entire army of immortal, regenerating Dark Matter clones from Kakine whose only means of beating him was a battle of attrition once his battery ran out

for people who dont wanna give it click
Character Mihawk cant beat:
Kaido, Big Mom, Saturn, Loki, Luffy, Shanks, Akainu, Whitebeard, Kizaru, Blackbeard
Characters he can beat:
Vista, Zoro, Donflamingo, Law, Rayleigh, Fujitora, Shiryu, Brook, Hawkins, Lucci

The current Accel literally has something like anti-magic(maybe even stronger than IB), which is what made it able to ignore Neftide's supernatural immortality and regeneration.
:miketime
all this and he's still a H.T. victim
