controversial could mean a lot of things. Either it's a character everyone dislikes (most isekai characters), or if a character people want but a match-up they didn't want (Galactus vs Anti-Monitor or Beerus instead of Unicron for example) or one that has a fanbase that will get heated regardless (Dragon Ball/Ben 10/Star Wars/Bleach) or a match-up that will inevitably cause a shitstorm regardless of which combatant wins (Dante vs Kratos, or Goku vs literally anyone) or it's a match-up people will feel doesn't deserve to be a season finale (Light/Columbo) or a lol memes character (Deadpool/Bendy/Slenderman/Cereal Mascot Battle Royale)
