What's especially funny is that at first the dude's design (or rather one of them, specifically his third ascension I believe) was considered kind of off-putting at first by a large portion of the player base, but after they played through the story it clicked and now he's super popular (most people still like his first ascension better though).

Weather either of them could have won or not, it doesn't matter because any win Mai could get would be cheapened by the fact Jonouchi either could not or would not go all out against her. I mean in both duels it's made clear that Jonouchi's aim is to save Mai, not to win the duel outright.

Here having the meaning of she only has three (four if you count Anzu since Mai threw that one), one random jobber dude, a mostly off-screen duel with Pegasus and a Jonouchi who was barely able to even stay on his feet.
It's just shitty how she got treated, especially when Anzu is actually undefeated (hell even Jonouchi's sister Shizuka won her only duel, though granted she had help), coupled with Mai's ungrateful heel turn she's probably the worst treated female Yu-Gi-Oh character ever and that's REALLY saying something.
