Chapter 1

As he stepped outside his front door for the first time in 12 years, he turned back to look at his mother the stoic expression on his face betrayed by the hint of fear that she could see behind his eyes. She knelt down in front of him and cupped his small face in her hands "you'll do fine dear" she said to him softly "just remember everything that your father and I taught you and you'll be just fine." She knew her son was special even amongst the other people with powers that were known about at the time but the fear of what that could mean for him in the future terrified her immensely. However, she knew that she couldn't keep him locked up in the house forever. The rumours that were starting to spread about her and her husband was starting to affect their livelihoods. She gave him a pat on the head and forced as genuine a smile as she could "Now go one, your going to be late for the bus." He gazed up at her for a moment longer, staring at her face before giving a smile himself and heading down the yard and out onto the street just as the school bus pulled up and opened its doors.

As Kril stepped up onto the bus, all eyes were on him immediately. It was the first time the bus had stopped in front of the "rumoured" house that lived at the end of the street. Kril looked around for a few moments before picking one of the empty seats near the front of the bus. It seemed like none of the kids really enjoyed sitting near the bus driver for one reason or another, but Kril wasn't used to this many new people so he picked a seat as far away from the others as possible.

As the bus driver pulled off and began heading towards the school, it was a few moments before the children began talking and whispering amongst themselves about the newest arrival. Kril leaned his head against the window and closed his eyes as the whispers reached his ears. "I thought he was a myth?", "Do you think he even knows how to speak?", "I wonder what his power is?" His mother had told him things like this would happen, so he kept his eyes closed and relaxed as the bus jostled and jerked along the road towards the school.

It was only a few minutes into the drive when Kril felt a presence in the empty seat next to him. He slowly opened his eyes looking to his left and was met with an intense rimmed steely grey gaze. The boy staring back at Kril had long dark red shoulder-length hair with a very stony expression on his face framed by dark steel-rimmed glasses which made him seem much older than he first appears. The two boys stared at one another for a few moments before the red-haired boy finally spoke up. "My name is Roy, Roy Norris, what's your name?" it took Kril a couple of seconds to find his voice, this was his first conversation with someone other than his parents and he wanted it to at least be somewhat normal. Despite this he could barely keep the intense gaze that Roy had on him as he spoke "Kril" he said his voice barely coming out at all "Kril G-Gein." Roy stared at him for another few moments, eyeing him up and down before his stony expression finally broke out into a smile. "Well nice to meet you Kril," he said, positioning himself in a more comfortable position in the seat. "Since it seems like this is gonna be your first day attending our school, there are a few things that you should know ahead of time" For the rest of the ride to the school Roy would talk about the school, the people in it and what all Kril could expect while attending. All the while Kril sat and listened, just happy that his first interaction with another person besides his family in years was going better than he had hoped.

Back at home, Kril's mother sat on the couch in the living room, staring at a blank television screen looking at herself. her Silver hair sat atop her head in a ponytail that she hadn't taken out since this morning. She knew it would be bad but she hadn't realized how badly Kril's absence would affect her now that he was gone. She nervously twiddled her thumbs and played with the edge of her shirt, every now and then staring at the clock above the television. Her ability let her keep tabs on anyone she's touched before, she just had to think about them in her head and a sort of imaginary map would ping their location in her head for them. She was using this to keep track of Kril as he rode the bus to school. Every time the bus stopped she would grip her shirt tightly thinking something bad was happening but the bus would soon start moving once again.

The sudden sound of the front door opening and closing broke her concentration as she realized her husband had arrived home. "Damn, Damn, Damn, Kye did he already leave for school? Did I miss seeing him off?" Kril's father stumbled into the living room taking off his had revealed his jet black hair that sat in a messy pile atop his head. "Unfortunately you did Ioan, you missed him by 20 minutes" His being home brought her stress levels down immensely. He worked at the Coroners' office as his ability allowed him to speak with the deceased, which was immensely useful with solving all sorts of crimes or accidents that resulted in death. "I'm tracking him right now and everything is going okay as far as I can tell." Ioan quickly sat down beside her and took his hand in hers. "how are you holding up? I know how hard it was for you to actually let him go." Kye tried to put on a brave smile but the quiver in her lip and the watering in her eyes betrayed her expression as she rested her head on his shoulder. "I didn't think it would be so hard, I'm just so worried something bad might happen to him." She quickly looked up, her white eyes gazing into his brown ones "What if they find out that he-" Ioan softly stroked her cheek cutting her off mid-sentence. "I worry too darling, but at some point, someone would find out, right now, we need to make sure that when they do, we are there for him and can protect him in case our worst fears are realized." She rested her head against his shoulder once again as they held each other on the couch. She began tracking Kril once again on her map, he was finally at the school.
