The overall point that I'm making, in case it still isn't clear, is that his reaction strikes me as more likely to come from him as scum, vs him being town. You say he would understand the optics, which I agree with, but that's what happened anyway, so if he's town you're suggesting he plays it like this in full knowledge that it can worsen his position.
